you need to install the drivers for your ipod before you hook it up to your PC.

You can get them from www.apple.com/support

do you have USB 2.0 on your computer? how old is the computer you want to keep your music on?

if you dont have USB 2.0 you will need to get a card before the nano will work

My laptop says USB device not recognized whenever I connect, however the ipod still comes up in itunes. Are you opening itunes after you connect to see if it shows up?

I had a problem with my iTunes recognizing my ipod. It would charge, but not update or open iTunes when you plugged it in. I took it to an apple store and they reset it or reformatted it or something for free and it took 2 minutes. Just make sure your songs are backed up on your computer.
