I have a 1994 runner and am currently running 1 JL Audio 10w0 in a bandpass box powered by a Planet Audio 200x2 amp. Its bridged right now and sounds pretty good (great to my ears) but takes up a little too much room. I was looking for something a little stealthier and thought about using the rear cubby holes to build 2 stealth enclosures, then building a false floor with a compartment for the amp and several compartments for the storage that was in the cubbies. Just wondering if anyone out there has done this and could tell me any problems and how much space I would have in the cubbies. I dont want to do any exposed cutting but who knows. Also, how much space do i need to for the amp to breathe. Thanks alot guys.

Also, if you are going to put money into building some custom boxes, look at going with a higher grade of speaker.... I had a 10W0 and replaced it with a 10W3v2-D2. There was a big difference in the sound....

I did something similar, except I didn't use the side cubby. I built storage along the back, with a sub box and an amp/relay box along the seats - put a false floor over the top of it all. And for those of you who may be asking... yes, it's been like 2 years and I still haven't gotten around to carpeting it. You can't really see it in the pics, but there is a heavy duty grille over the sub that is flush with the surface of the false floor. It's pretty strong - my dogs jump all over it, I've had the back loaded with crap on several occasions, and I've moved more than my share of furniture, tvs, etc. back there.

If I have my way, the box will be relatively cheap to build. Im trying to keep it all behind the paneling, with only the speakers being exposed when i have the doors off the cubbies. I'd like to use 10 w3v2's but I already have 1 10w0 and one of my friends bought another 10w0 at the same time I did...hopefully I will be able to get my hands on it. Also, I think (could be wrong about this) the 10w3v2s need a little more airspace and I'm not real sure that I can fit them in without doing some cutting and I'd probably need a better amp to push them. The amp I have now was powering the speaker off one channel and sounded fine before I bridged it, so I think another of the same series should work fine with it. Thanks for all the help guys.

Apparently I'm the only one who has removed the cubby box liner thing and actually measured it.

There is not enough depth for much of a sub at all back there if you want to keep it all concealed (like I want to).

My plan is to make a fiberglass box that uses as much of the cavity as possible to gain airspace in the box. The only sweet shallow depth sub I've come across (we had this discussion about a month or so ago) are Illusion Audio subs. They have the magnet on the cone side to save depth. I don't have any dealers nearby, so I can't give them a listen. THey are looking for distribution in my area. Hmmmm. If there is enough of an interest, I'll make a mold of the box I come up with and sell them "loaded" with an IA sub.

I would like to do 1-12" in the driver's rear quarter. The drivers rear quarter has more airspace than the passenger (on 2nd Gens) since the gas filler is on the passenger side. I'm not sure how much airspace I can get. I'd love to shoehorn a 15 in there, but I don't think I have the airspace.

Thanks for the tip on the Blau's. Those are super cool!!! Couldn't find any box volume requirements though. A buddy of mine is a Blau dealer. I never would have thought of them...

 

yeah, i wanted to do this a while ago. there is definetly not enough depth at least for my 10" MTX's. i just build a small cargo box/sub box. im planing on making a carpeted false floor this summer.

if you did make the boxes and what not depending on the price i might do it, but since i already have all my stuff set up, probably not, cause then i would have to sell what i have and spend more money. which i would rather put towards a lift.

 

if you dont have a spare tire underneath, make a metal box with a smallport stick up.

then mount it where the spare tire and make the port long enough to reach into the rear area cargo floor. that is completely stealth.

while you're back there, cut a rectangular section right behind the rear seats. then have a welder make a metal box to hold the amps and your procs.

when everthing is done, you'll have a flat floor.

I was planning to do something like this, but am on the fence about it now since I'm not sure I want my spare hanging off of my bumper. I will need the entire cargo area floor for all the gear I have. Sub would still need to go in the side.

why are you building a stealth submarine? It will never fit in your runner. For stealth material, check out James Bond, Tomorrow Never Dies.

 

Looks to me like it did fit...either that or he had it propped up for the pictures. Thats why I wanted to get ahold of him.
