HELP-1986 toyota 4runner radio wiring nightmare

I just recently purchased a 1986 toyota 4runneer, and naturally the factory wiring harness for the stereo has been clipped off. previous owner had a wire tapped into the 12v constant side of the clock for the 12v constant of the stereo. I don't think this is correct, but I could be mistaken. Any comments and ideas of proper installation are greatly appreciated.

thanks for the helpful information. I pulled back the covering on the wires and found the 12v power wires. my next problem is now the 12v constant wire is not reading twelve volts, it stays at zero, even grabbed another voltmeter thinking it was faulty equipment. maybe thats why they tapped into the 12v constant for the clock, so the radio would keep memory. any more info. is greatly appreciated thanks

I see that issue on about 80% of all hardwires that I've had to repair. Check the fuses in the kickpanel as well as the fuses underhood in the fuse gang.

I just said forget the factory wiring and wired my system in my 87 all new...and when I pulled up the carpet to start...found about 2 sets of previous wire connected to nothing...so who knows what was in there.

Start fresh and do it right and then you don't have to worry about it. It isn't hard to do it yourself either...just takes some time and patience.

what is going to be the most effective way of rewiring the stereo? should i run the 12v constant directly from the battery, from the fuse panel, or leave it tied into 12v constant on the clock? i know i can run the 12v switched from the fuse panel, and run a seperate ground from a clean area of metal.

I would go ahead and use the clock for the memory wire. It is going to draw less than 1 amp and should be stable.

Just my 2 cents.
