Dimmer question

Well today i got to playing around with the wiring on my 97 4runner. I have allways not like the fact that the clock does not adjust its brightness when all of the other lights do. So i tryed linking it to a switched 12volt source. Well at this point in time i think i wire came loose because its not on at all now. So has anyone else done this? Also i tryed hooking up my Alpine CD player to the same 12volt source, however it does not dim. Im going to open it back up soon and check again. Any ideas on that one?

If memory serves, vacuum fluorescent gauges either don't dim, or need some special dimmer to dim.

"Ehinfinity" & "Cebby"... the installation of a "rheostat"(that can be picked up from, say, RadioShack)in the circuit would work.

actually, i believe cebby is right... need's to be digitally controlled, don't think it's as simple as throwing in some resistance. i believe throwing in a rheostat would effect the clocks function, but i'm not 100%
