In-dash MP3 player---any suggestions that won't break the bank?

Guys,

My wife's cd player crapped out on her so I want to surprise her and buy her an in-dash MP3 player for her birthday. Any suggestions that won't break the bank? She doesn't need all the fancy features, just something that is easy to operate, easy to upload/download the files, etc.

Bob, Reapur is up on all of this stuff, and he said the Sony MP70 gets high marks.

When playing a raw MP3 file on it, going to the next song is just like on a regular CD.

With a lot of the other ones like Pioneer, there can be a 5 second delay between MP3 files.

That is the deck I will be getting someday to replace my current Sony.
This is the shop I deal with, and it's gone down from $500 to $350.

The CD tray is also just like on your PC.
It slides out and offers great shock protection.
Not that Sony's ever skip anyway, I have yet to make my Sony skip a CD ever, even off road.

so i could just straight burn mp3 files to a cd, it's it'll play no problem? tiiiiight. does it automatically know who the band is?

i actually really like the stock player in my 2002, but i also like the idea of mp3 capability. anyone know if there are any mp3 players out there that also play regular cds AND cassete tapes? that would be the ultimate. (yeah i know, weird, still listen to tapes)

I've been wondering about the same thing lately This is the one I've been considering, but after reading what Corey said about not having any problems with a Sony skipping, I may go that route

Kenwood KDC-MPV7019

If I remember right I saw it at Costco a few months ago, but I don't remember how much it was Crutchfield has it for $219.99 which I think is pretty reasonable for an MP3 Head Unit.

It will probably be a while before I get around to buying a new stereo, so hopefully when I can the prices will be down a bit

Yup - you burn mp3's to a CD just like any data CD!! So, this means no need for a CD changer!! I've fit 6 or 7 CD's worth of music on 1 single mp3 CD. It's awesome. And the song title displays on the little LCD. (It doesn't know it automatically - it goes off the filename of your mp3)

I have the Rockford Fosgate MP3/CD player - I'm not sure which model - but it's way cool!!

I bought the Kenwood mp522 for my gf, and I think it is an awesome player. Here's a link to it on Crutchfield if you want to see what the features are....MP522

Salue,

I've had Kenwood stuff and I'm very interested in buying this player. As others have mentioned, does your player skip? Or does your player have 5 second gaps between songs? The last issue would definitely be a reason NOT to buy any player.

Thanks,
Bob

This player has not skipped yet at all. As far as the 5 second delay, I'm not sure as I've never thought about it. But, when listening to it go from song to song, I've never thought that it was taking long to get to the next song. So, to answer that question, I don't think there's a 5 sec. delay but never timed it or anything. I am really happy I got this one, it's really easy to use and I like the looks of it.....And the 160 or so songs on one cd is great!

This one plays cds, cd-r, cd-rw, cassette, and of course MP3s!
Also this is a double din deck so it fits right into the dash without a pocket underneath.
$449.99 - CrutchField
Average $293 on eBay

Guys,

Thanks for all the responses. I'm going to go w/ the Kenwood that Salue has. It helps that Crutchfield will finance it interest free for 180 days.

Bob, one more think to think about also is are you wanting to add a sub to it?
The Kenwood (I just looked at the specs) only has two sets of preamp outputs @2v, and no room for a sub.

Reason I am going with the Sony is it's preamp outputs are 4v or higher, and it also has a 3rd set of preamp outputs for a sub woofer.

With the 3rd set, you have total control over the volume of your sub woofer independent of your main speakers.

With a 2 preamp output deck, you can not adjust the subs volume seperately from the main speakers.

Corey,

Thanks for the scoop. I really don't know much about stereo stuff.

I don't think my wife will want a sub. I don't think she'd want to blast Christian music!

I agree with you Bob that getting it through Crutchfield and having it financed through them interest free for 180 days is very cool

Another thing (that's actually going to get me to order my new stereo soon) is that if you buy one of the Kenwoods (including the MP522) and a Sirius Satelite Antenna (~$50) you get a free Kenwood Sirius Satelite Radio Tuner . So I think that's a pretty cool deal (Mainly because I've been wanting to get a Satelite Radio for my truck, because it's next to impossible to get a decent radio signal when I'm out in the desert, and sometimes I just like listening to the radio and plus you can't beat that it's commercial free)

So if you're interested in Satelite Radio (Specifically Sirius) just add which ever Sirius Antenna you like This is the one I'm getting

I just thought that I'd let you know about that deal that Crutchfield has going

I love my alipine cda-7894. Motorized face, 60x4 watts, great sound, xm radio ready, etc. Very pretty too (dual color illumination). I think mine was $313 shipped from discountsjungle.com. I ordered all 4 infinity kappa series speakers for my 94 runner on friday around 7pm and they sent me a tracking number by 9 pm to say they'd shipped my order. I've had good luck with them in the past. Very cheap and great service.. but be careful because some of the items they sell are refurbs.
