CD player acting weird

My dad's sony cd player has been acting up lately. Radio works fine but the cd player doesnt work all the time. If you turn it on, it will play, but may be a bit jumpy. Not too bad but is noticeable. Also, when you try to change the volume while playing a cd, the sound is completely lost. It is still playing but you cant hear anything. You have to turn it off and on a few times to get it to sound again but like before, if you change the volume, the sound stops. Changing the volume on the radio still works like normal. I cant figure it out. Anyone have any clues as to what's happeining? I really dont want to shell out for another cd player as the car is kinda old. Any help would be appreciated.

We already tried cleaning the lens but would that really be related to the volume thing? Anyone else have any clues?

Hmm, sounds kinda sketchy. If you don't have problems with the volume adjustment while listening to the radio, I would say its not a volume knob/button related problem. If the annoyances only occur within the operation of the CD player, my thoughts would be that somewhere in the circuitry of the CD player your experiencing problems. You might call around to a radio repair shop, (like a home stereo repair shop) and see if they have any thoughts. Best of luck.
