by the way that storage shelf thing (that apparently needs to be removed) in 4th gens is so cool. i test drove a 4th genner on wednesday, and was really impressed with the new features and gadgets.

unfortunately, the high pressure salesguy had me storming out angrily!

I don't have one for the reason that you mentioned...shelf has top come out and I love that shelf.

All my hardcore stuff hides under the shelf and day to day stuff just gets put on top. best part is the gap left is perfect to hold my clubs without rolling around

My install is coming along. I ditched the factory JBL sub and amp and have the two JL Audio's (500/1 and 300/4) in that slot behind the panel. Much cleaner than on the back of the seats. We may add a small fan that pushes the air out of the speaker grille in the panel that belongs with the factory sub.

Sub box is a low profile box that fits under the shelf and fires down.

Removable if required easily.

In short, Shelf stays, Stealth goes !!!

Thanks David. That was quick. I was just about to PM you for this thread and when I checked to get the link - you had already responded! I must ask for some pics of your setup however. PRETTY PLEASE!! Is there another 4th gen audio thread I am missing out on?

Here's a link to a similar thread -
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...ght=Stealthbox

BTW, I am aware there is a new audio forum on Yotatech. I posted in the main tech section because there are more users in here.

I see that the forum is breaking out interests into seperate sections. Does anyone else think Yotatech should be further divided by Model/Generation?
I have always noticed that Trucks & 4Runners were lumped together. Wouldn't it be better to seperate them even if they share common frames/parts? I would also like to see 1st gen/ 2nd gen/ 3rd gen/ 4th gen in the 4 Runners section. That way you could find more consolidated info on the generation you are interested in. Is it just me?

you change your opinion if you had one. My wife's '03 came with one and it was really cool at first. now it sits in the closet in the guest bedroom because it was always in the way.

I agree. My shelf is always up when it should be down and down when it should be up. I've unloaded the tools and stuff I store under the shelf onto the ground, so I could lower the shelf to carry something tall, more times than I can count.

I'm very close to pulling the darn thing out entirely.

keisur:

You're talking about the shelf, not the roll-up cover? I took the cover out on day one and it hasn't been back. The shelf, on the other hand, though super lame, just stays down all the time and doesn't really get in the way. But, I'd be happy to take it out for the JL sub.

The shelf is really a gimmick. The top shelf is too small and stuff falls off when I drive. The bottom shelf is too short -- about a shoe box will fit there. The space behind the shallow top shelf is too narrow.

yes the shelf. the cover is a good thing and easily removed and reinstalled. We tried just leaving that POS shelf in and down all the time but when we put both our mountain bikes in it I have to lower my seat since the shelf makes it about 2 inches to high to fit in there. so it's either break out the receiver hitch bike rack or lower my seat. The receiver rack isn't good when we plan on going shopping or something. so we just pulled the stupid thing and everything fits good and we don't loose any height from having that thing in there.

Beauty -- thanks for the reply -- whas it easy enough to get out? It doesn't leave anything looking messed-up or unfinished when it comes out, does it? Let me know, 'cuz maybe I'll just go ahead and yank it out. Then I can order the Husky mat and not worry about the sides hanging over the edge of it! Thanks.

2-4 bolts if I remember. yeah, it leaves a little ledge at the base of the seat backs that looks a little unfinished. I'll snap a picture tomorrow if I can get out there before she heads off to work. A husky liner has a lip at the front end which would cover up the ledge I think so you might not have to worry about it.

Oh good , that clears it up. SO in fact although its actually very useful for me and the way I use my truck, its actually lame

So the fact that the gap btw the seats and the shelf when up is perfect for hiding my GF's purse or a camera out of sight when I park downtown and the fact that it folds flat in 0.2 of a second if you need a flat load space is also lame.

Good, glad we cleared that up and glad thats the facts and not just someones opinion....

I will dump mine right now

Anyone wanna but one cheap

BTW, if you take it out, there is a small gap but the bolt holes are covered by a trim piece.

David

Originally I wanted the DD shelf, but listening to you guys I might pass.

I haven't heard anyone review the actual JL sub yet though....
Does it match?
Does it rattle?
Does it hit?
Can you mount a amp on the front of it? (the area that looks like shark gills - or is that some kind of vent/port?)

For those of you with the DD shelf, what is the height of this thing? Could I fit a 10" bazooka tube under it? I have one with a Kicker F 10" in it. If that didn't work, I originally thought about building a sub box under the shelf, but I think it is too small?

Thanks for any replies.

From what I understand.

* Match is acceptable (I have seen a gray one )
* The one I saw in a 3rd gen was heavy and solid (no rattles)
*Acceptable performance for a single ten. Bear in mind, a 10 in a sealed enclsoure will excell in accuracy and will be tight but will not go low or
hit really hard.
* No room for amp BUT amp can go behind it where factory amp/sub goes.
* I have a sub box being finished that goes under shelf. Sub has to fire down as not enough room for a 10 to be vertical. We mocked one up and it sounded really nice for what I want.

Will report when complete.

Overall, the Stealth boxes are very solid, perform well if not exceptional and look factory. I feel they are a little expensive for what you get.
