I have a 2001 T4R SR5 and I am going to be installing a new head unit. Im trying to find a guide, some pics or any info about how to pull out the dash to get the old unit out and put the new one in. Can anyone help?

 

I got the instructions from Crutchfield. I can send them to you. But it is real easy. First pull up the emergency brake. Then OPEN the armrest. Pull up on the trim around the emergency brake. It will pop up. Then you can pull up the trim around the shifter. Then you pull out on the trim around the radio...it will be tougher but it will pop out. Unplug the electrical plugs from the trim.
The radio only has 4 screws securing the bracket from the front. That's it...very simple.

It really is easy.... It all pulls apart. No screws until you try and remove the actual unit.
Also, when you get to the point of removing the original unit. Remember to remove the original amp as well or the purchased wiring adapters will not fit.

 

The amp is the little grey box behind and below. It really is that easy.

 

cool...I was just making sure because I have my head unit coming in the mail and it will be here on friday. I want to have everything ready so I can install it then.

i replaced mine in my 98, i didnt have to take off the arm rest, is the 2001 setup different?

 

You don't have to take off the armrest. You open the armrest, that exposes the trim in front of it. When that trim is off, the trim around the shifter is easier to remove. When that trim is off, the trim around the unit and climate control is removeable.

 

hmmm i had no amp to remove in mine just a stock cd player and a fm/am/tape deck player i did see a box down below but it said something for the airbag

 

I swapped out my radio in my 99 Taco - went well. Now I have a 99 4runner, just got my Kenwood in this week (double DIN baby!). I'm hoping it goes as smoothly.

do all 4runners have the amp cause i dont think mine had 1 like the stock amp

 

I don't believe so, the basic radio setup probably did not have the amp below it. It is usually a silver metal box behind and below the stock stereo. I think only the deluxe or JBL systems have the amp.

I did mine last week -not too bad at all. I did have to remove the amp...any way to use that for something else?? hmm..

 

Not worth the time to figure out the wiring in my opinion.

 

HU Removal How-To: (For 2000 4WD 4Runner)

1. Pull e-Brake Up
2. Put transmission in N
3. Remove Transfer Case Selector Knob
4. Grab rear-most portion of the transmission trim (where the TCS boot meets the trim). Pull up. Remove the rest of the way. There are 4 clips, 1 on each cornor of that piece.
5. Remove Ash-Tray and Cig Lighter.
6. Grab LowerMost portion of the dash. Pull. Work your way around. When you get to the top, be careful, as there is wiring. Unplug the 4 connectors. Leave the wiring at the bottom. Put the dash piece in the passenger footwell.
7. The HU is 4 screws, which can be removed with a screwdriver. Youre going to need the brackets on the side of your OEM HU to mount the A-Market HU.

Tips on reinstallation:
1. When you reconect the wire harnesses at the top, watch where they go. There are 4 harnesses, but 5 plugs. the Black harness fits into 2 spots, the clock plug, and a dummy. If you plug it into the dummy, your clock wont work. The dummy is the lower one of the two. You dont want to use that.
