2002 Tacoma radio in 1992 4Runner?

Will a 2002 Tacoma radio, double din type, fit in a 1992 4Runner? My radio in the 4Runner is about toast and I need to buy a new one but I would rather put a new one in the Tacoma since it is my daily driver, want the mp3 aspect of it. I would then put the taco radio in the 4Runner. I can only get one which I why I want to do this. Has anyone put a double din radio in the 2nd gen?

they "should" technically be able to be interchanged. they "should" both use the same style factory toyota harness ( aftermarket metra part number 70-1761 ). the obvious easiest way is to remove both of the radios and plug the tacoma radio into the 4runner before reassembling everything since the 4runner requires a decent amount of dissasembly. Most if not all of the 2nd gen 4runners had a seperate amplifier for the rear speakers and most of the newer yotas that are amplified switched to the JBL system. if the taco has a JBL system, the radio will most likely not work in the runner. You may have to end up running new wires to each rear speaker to bypass the amp, if i remember correctly the amp is built in to the housing on each rear speaker.
good luck and post up what you find out

the JBL radio would be in the tacoma would say JBL on it in white, usually in the bottom right corner i think. the 4runner wont have a JBL radio, rather the two rear speakers will be individually amplified. i may be wrong and someone feel free to correct me if i am, but i think all 2nd gen 4runners had amplified rear speakers. if the tacoma radio is not an amolified system, the radio would more than likely not have a remote turn on output from the deck. If that is the situation, you will have to figure out how to send a remote signal to the rear amplifiers. let me know if this makes sense so far. basically it can be done but more than likely, it wont be a plug and play type of thing.

Ok, I just put the new stereo in the Taco and it sounds great. Went to check and see if the Taco stereo will install in the 4runner and the plugs on the back end of the stereo are different. Does anyone know if there is an adapter for it. The 4runner has only one plug while the Taco has 2.

Thanks Elton, you are correct. Didn't even realise there was an amp there. Appreciate the help.

Did you have any issues with the taco deck and the trim plate on the 4runner?

No I did not, the issue was that I had to route the haress behind the amp and had to cut some of the tape around the harness so it would reach. other than that, it was a perfect fit.
