Spraypainting truck black...affraid
#22
Alright, I guess it's my turn to chime in.
I just painted my girlfriend's Mazda B2200 Black with spray cans.
It was a very weathered grey and she had it covered in stickers. I spent about 3 days prepping.
First I removed all the stickers and any residue with some Googone and a razor blade. That took about a day and a half......YES that many stickers... F*(&^#*&^ Hippies
Anyway then I went to even things out with some sand paper. I wet sanded the whole truck smooth with 600 grit wet sand paper. This was the most important step in my opinion, it brought everything to an even level. Had my girlfriend been nicer I would have gone on to bondo a couple little dents that I couldn't pop out, but she wasn't so I didn't...
Then I gave it a goow washing to remove the sanding residu and have a clean base for the paint to grab.
Next step was to tape off the key hole, handles, lights, emblems, windows, rims and tires, etc. etc. etc.
Then the fun part....8 cans of Gloss Black from Kragen. ($40.00)
I sprayed in long even strokes over each panel overlapping half the spray width each time. I estimate about 3 coats.
It did leave and Orange peel pattern from the sprayying....but no drips or runs. When I feel sassy I will probably lightly wet sand the finish to get everything smooth looking (remove the orange peel texture)
Honestly, I think it looks great.....way better than before. It doesn't look like a shop painted it, but I think it looks good. Definitely a worthy improvement for $40.00
and some time.
I have a deal of experience spraying guitars with rattle cans, so I think that helped.
Just don't rush anything, spray even coats and let things dry in between coats. If a spot doesn't totally get covered, catch it on the next coat rather than have the possibilities of drips.
I would Also recommend using a gloss paint, it will look better especially if you aren't planning on doing a clearcoat over it.
