I just finished the SAS and may check engine light came on. I found out the code was PO500 which is malfunctioning speed sensor. I no longer have any speed sensors so it makes sense; however did non abs 4runners have the sensor on the transmission? Does anybody know what parts I need to convert it so I have a speedometer and no check engine light?

 

Anybody have any ideas?

What size tires are you running?

 

37x12.50's and they look small. I think I'm going to switch from Rancho 44044 spring to stock waggy springs so hopefully it will drop about 2-3". It ended up higher than I wanted it.

 

I thought that the speed sensor was on the T-case?? I don't think that there is anything on the front suspension.

 

If you have abs there is a sensor at each wheel.

Yes, there is an ABS sensor at each wheel, but i think the speed sensor is on the T-case... With your ABS sensors removed, you should get an ABS light, not a check engine.

 

speed sensor is indeed on the T-case, ABS or NON ABS. It is always on the T-case. Maybe your sensor itself has gone out.

When I did my conversion I had to get a speed sensor out of a 4WD since my 2WD sensor would not fit. Cost me maybe $20 from a junk yard.

 

I did get an ABS Light. After I removed the rear sensors my speedometer would work about half of the time, once I removed the front the speedometer no longer worked and the check engine light came on. Maybe as Nitro said the sensor is shot. Does anybody know if the computer will just use the wheel sensors if it isn't gettign a signal from the t-case?

 

I finally found out that there were a few 4runners produced which had no speed sensor on the transfer case, mine is one of those. I have called a few dealers and when they enter my vin # no speed sensor comes up. I decided to extend the rear speed sensor lines, to see if it helped and my speedometer works and no more check engine light. The speedo is just off by quite a bit since it is measuring tire speed not gear speed.

 

Not really true. On the '05 tacoma's not only are the fly by wire but the speed sensor is not at the rear of the transfer case. The spot where it usually is, is covered with a plate so it is being read from somewhere else. So his 4runner may be the same.

 

Some 3rd gen's have no transfer case speed sensor, it's all done throught the ABS system.
