Recovery Points Anyone?

Well as usual I was bored today and decided to finally do something with my new welder. So I went down to northern tool and bought some 1/2" D-rings and finally made myself some front recovery points. (about time after the last time when we had to use my lower A-arm)

well first things first removed that waste of metal brush guard

Looks so weird to me

next removed the bumper: Detailed Writeup

Point of clarification

This mount has 2 screws, one vertical one, and one horizontal one with the head pointing to the rear of the vehicle, I sugguest removing the horizontal screw, the vertical one was very hard to get the bumper tabs off.

Bumper off, and endcaps sanded, cleaned, and re welded for strength

looks good

final product

Close up

Also had to trim the lower plastic part of the bumper to expose the d-rings, I will put that picture up tomorrow.
Temporary solution, hopefully a new bumper is in my next 2 months future

well the endcap should fail long before the welds do. as far as mounting them, steel and welds can usually take more tension (outward pull) than shear force. if they were mounted to the bottom they would be a. harder to get to in a muddy recovery situation, and b they would experience that lateral shear which would compromise the welds i believe

Did you weld the end caps on?

You DO know, they just pull out, right?

Mines kinda near the same way, but i have a 2x2 running between the frames, which is also a bumper mount.

Red face

Why did you get bolt on D rings if you were going to weld them??

I also don`t like where you put them but it is your vehicle .

If i had to get someone out of some place in mud I will attach to the lowest point i can get.

1. those were the only ones available
2. they are in the lowest place on my vehicle, the suspension is the only part lower?

Its a great idea what you did, but I hate to say, you are going to pull those right out even with welding them on as you did.
Just look at the tow points and tie down on the frame, they are frame plated from the inside.

Another thing, although I am no expert, you would get better grounding if you grounded the frame itself rather than the tow ring.

I would rethink your tow points to at least the brace the other person showed on the post.

1/8" is not going to support your tow points.

You really trust those welds and attachment point with the forces that it could be subjected to it?

tested it out the other day by sinking it in a sandy muddy hole and got snatched out. worked great, no bends no cracks theyre as strong as ever
and alot of welders are picky they will only function if there is a good connection so the ring made a good ground for what i was doing
