I normally keep it underneath but when wheeling I strap it down inside.

Thanks! I saw yours and it looks great. You also built it a lot quicker than my slow ass.
I ended up doing a temporary paint job with some Rustoleum satin black but it doesn't look too bad.

 

question....

when building a bumper out of rectangle tube like this, if you only work on it so often, is rusting from the inside a problem? i mean, if you dont get the side wings on when you first get the box tubing, will it start rusting from the inside out and potentially make it weaker?

 

If it's gonna be a slow build-up then your better off spraying some sort of rust inhibitor on the metal. When I built mine I kept spraying primer over it to prevent rusting.

TStango, you did a very good job on it, glad to see my design on the eastcoast... I'll be doing another bumper write-up very soon, with more details and measurments.

I came up with a better way to mount the shroud, using 5 brackets that bolt to the inner side of the 2 x 4. You simply snap them to the plastic then bolt it into place. Just make sure the shroud is heated up so when it's flexed into place it doesn't crack, eventually it will hold the shape.

but what about the inside of the tube...did you just spray primer down in it or what...?

 

You only have rust continuing to grow where you have oxygen, so theoretically once you seal weld up a bumper the inside of the tube won't rust anymore unless it isn't fully sealed.

I just stand up rect tubing like that on its end and spray the inside good...from both ends...but it really helps to store your materials in a dry place out of the elements. If not, coat it w/ something.

 

The rear tube on mine is sealed up, although I admit I didn't give it much thought at the time about any rust on the inside.
The rust in the pictures was just on the surface from direct water contact for the most part.. I was able to clean it up quickly before I sprayed everything down with primer.

I'm still going to need to take the bumper off soon and have it proffessionally painted though. The temporary spray job I did was just to get it through the winter. The spray from the rear tires have sandblasted much of it.
