Home made snorkel

ok so ive wanted a snorkel for a while now , since they dont make one for my truck with this engine .. im making my own ..

I know they make one for the landcruisers with the 2uz , but i really dont want to buy one just to see if it fits ..

did all the easy stuff today only took about 30-45 minutes.

im really not sure what to make this thing out of , i was thinking using the hood and body panels of the 4runner in my driveway .. but am unsure yet. im not that good at welding that thin stuff .but i think it would be best because its thin .. not to heavy .. and its free !!!
im going to use one of those cheap safari heads from ebay for the top.

that's gonna be sick! nobody else has fitted a pass. side commercially made snorkel on a 1st gen before? you might be able to get one from like a tacoma or an 80 series LC and make them fit, but all those are overpriced pieces of styled plastic and i the custom sheet metal snorkel will look pretty savage on there. man, i need to hurry up and get my electrical upgraded so i can play around with a welder in my garage. bumper looks really good now.

Not sure how that cardboard is going to handle a water crossing.

thanks !

I looked at tacoma ones and the small one would get in the way of the antenna motor and the bigger one just doesnt have the angles , i think it would look crooked ,although i havnet seen one in person , just online .

i really hope it wont be to heavy.

and also its only costing me time, really ...i guess in the end thats what matters more ..

i wasnt planning on using the cardboard only .. i planned on spraying some silicone or bedliner on it .. i think that should work.

fiberglass would definitely be the way to go for your custom job and get everything the way you need it to be w/o messing with thin sheet metal. you could even get clever with it and imprint some script or symbols into the surface if you wanted to. you sure you want to make the section across the fender so long though? i've never been a fan of the long fender tube, i'd rather have the hole closest to the firewall as possible if i were to put a snorkel on. i think you could clear the antenna motor and still have enough room at half the length. might even have enough room to install your pass-through connector tube at perhaps a 45* angle instead of 90*, since tight bends severely reduce airflow in ducting.

ppvc would not look ghetto? buy a snorkel tip and you have yourself a viable snorkel. plus i have access to ppvc?

lol at yoter haha.

was your snorkel head a beer can with holes poked in it?

they should change the name of this thread to 'whats the most obnoxious way to make a snorkel?'

Heck, while RMA is screwing around doing it the "right" way... the rest of us should see just how redneck we can engineer a WORKING (at least one shot) snorkel. I bet I could get toilet paper tubes, duct tape and saran wrap to hold up for a little bit.
