Custom Flat Bed - Bolt-on
Let me know what you guys think of my Flat bed prototype (NOT FINISHED) i decided to build, That is going to be bolt-on designed to work with my 3" BL and also without any BL. If enough people like it, i will think about building some more. The plus side is that it is VERY low cost, simple to build, can take punishment from rocks, and you still get a little bed out of the flat bed.
Things i would change so far:
- Larger tubing, step up to 1-5/8" instead of 1-1/2"
Things left to build:
- 1/8" steel diamond plate bedding
- Tailgate
- a little more tubing addition
- on-board air tank
- fuel filler neck mount
Just started with basic 2x1" square tubing.
Then added some sides 1.5" tubing.
Adding the actual bed part.
Added some rack support.
Fully Welded and all cleaned up.
Painted with 4 spot lights and LED blinkers, tailights, and amber strobes. Lights are from superbrightled.com and etrailer.com - both are reasonably priced.
Added some wood for temporary usage.
Got the 37" Tracot supply toolbox, fits perfectly!
Thinking of either mounting the air tank here or under one of the bed side rails.
With the lights on, sorry for bad quality.
Can't forget about the bottle opener on the tailgate!
Went wheeling. I think my truck looks 100x better without mud flaps. Threw on a temp plywood tailgate.
Trying to put the bed to the test.
Unfortunately my door took most of it.
MORE to come!

Nice! my only suggestion would be to make the main hoop out of round tube and make the main hoop braces bigger. But you work with what you've got, and either way it looks good man!

how many feet of the 2 by 1 square tubing did you end up using? and is the square tubing 1/8th wall? looks very good might have to borrow some ideas from yours to incorperate into mine.

Looks great! I love the high sides and integrated turn signals.
Definitely look into making the main bar out of one piece bent to the profile of the cab.
One question though, if all the beds are custom made, why keep the 3" lift blocks and not make the mounts out of one piece?

wow did not expect to get so many replies the first day. thanks everyone!
yeah i know its been a while since i have been on here, I was way into my 510 project and just sorta got away from my truck. yep no more boggers i made a hard decision to sell them to buy a motor for my 510, but now that, that is gone, time to build my truck up again!
just the tubing part is very light (2 people can lift it) but what i plan to do it bed it with steel diamond plate 1/8", it will be heavy. but probably just enough to keep the back end more planted and not as bouncy.
I was going to go all round tubing, but i was going for a headache rack type flat bed, which made me go for square tubing.
I will have to guestimate about 32' ? and yeah it was 1/8" wall.
no way, definitely not for roll over protection, more of just a cab protection from trees and rocks from the sides and lighting mounts.
I kept my lift blocks on for this build because, i built it on the truck, and my cab is sitting on 3" lift blocks, so i just built it on the blocks, so that if i were to sell it, it could be used on a stock truck with little modification to the tailgate area.

Well; I need a bed for my 87 P/U (all rotted out) That uses stock tail lights and a new fiberglass one is $1600. yours look much more substantial & with a roll bar / light tube would be a real cool replacement.
Can you make a kit? I do have access to a mig & stick machine. That would make shipping more palitable.

Sharp Looking! I'll apologize now but I'll probably steal some of your design work when it comes time to replace the rotting bed on my '89 p.u. Also like the IH seen in the background. Again, very nice flatbed.

I'd cap off those open ends, looks good otherwise. I guess you guys don't have many trees where ya wheel, or those tractor lights would get peeled off in a hurry!

yeah i still gotta do that and replace the wood with diamond plate, thats where that rust is coming from the top thats not capped yet, and i had to drill a small hole so water would not collect in the tubing. hard to find time to finish it up! haha
