Cost of SASing an 02 Runner
#81
Not to make it personal, but just to ask some questions for the sake of clarity and legitimate progression. How often do you wheel?
Once a month, twice if I'm lucky
How much time do you spend on the highway? Not much, I have two other vehicles I drive. It pretty much sits in the garage, unless I feel like driving it that day.
How much money is currently tied up in the truck?
truck I paid off last month. everything else I'm guessing somewhere around $10K

Guy has a massive garage with seemingly every freaking tool...no wonder he SAS'd his alone in 3 days.
Yeah hes back and forth between here and SC. Also Cornfed is here

Sha-Zam, Really what you need to do is attend the Moab event. You'll understand at the end of 3 days more than you will after 3 years of web wheeling.

If you pay someone else, this is going to be a $10k deal. At that point, you will have no idea how to swap broken birfs, how to change inner axles or how many balls are supposed to be in that joint.
I can't believe you have $10k into already with only a rear locker.
You make it sound like a trail only truck. I sure would think twice about swapping and and making it a dedicated trail rig. Seems like there are cheaper rigs that would do way better.
Sounds like you want someone else to do it. Have fun. My money is on a front locker and more seat time. Oh well.

i think he understands what everyone else would do with their trucks.
He wants to do it, let him. with the $$$ he seems to have i am not going to mind looking at the set up that ends up under that thing. my bet is coilovers and a 3 link or a radius arm set up, something like Dick's or the other guy that Bentup just finished.
what i don't get, shahzad? you are in med school right? or are you doing a paid residency?

I don't mind the critisism, or suggestions on how to proceed. I would rather you guys tell me I'm a dumb ass to my face then tell me "yeah man go for it" and then go back and laugh. All the suggestions everyones given so far make perfect sense. I should just lock it in the front and wheel for a little while longer. Or if I'm hell bent on doing something different, then a long travel kit from Total Chaos would be the way to go. But I want a SA, and thats what I'm going to do.
Update: still waiting to hear back from Front range. I talked to cornfed, and he said me would be up for a SAS this fall. The guy here in Pa said hes done one SAS, and that was on a Raider (I think), so not sure if I want to go with him on this one. Although he is a pretty knowledgable guy. I also e-mailed someone at bentup to see what they had to say.
that front range axle is way too expensive, I'm just going to look for a wagoneer axle or something and rebuild that one.

Do it right or don't do it at all.
Why don't you start with the Marlin Crawler, you will have to have that either way you go. See what a beast that is, go from there. Mine still moves oil from the tranny to the old case. 1 year later still working the bugs out.

Once again, I disagree. Crawl now. Swap next.

If I do the crawler now, I'm still not locked in the front, so what good is that going to do me?
I just don't see the point is spending money twice to accomplish one task. Is there something to be said for the experience gained with wheeling with IFS, and a locked front. Absolutely. But I'm willing to forgo that experience, and get the practice in on the SA.

Forget re-gearing and install a Marlin Crawl box, I'm one of the fortunate one's who has had no problems with oil leaks etc..... If you go to dual T-cases you can run with 4.10's, even without a front locker, the control you gain is well worth it. I very rarely lock the front, so it wouldn't be a waste, if you choose to go SAS afterwards.

You can sort of fake it, not on descents though. I am a crawler believer and there is no substitute for gearing.
If you want a solid axle, buy one. Go ahead it makes no difference to me. I am just trying to share what insight I have on a decision that I too have faced.
My plan is to stop at a friends house with the axle ready to hang and the rear link kit in the back so we can knock it out in a weekend. When you pay other people to do your work, you are at their mercy on timelines and quality, ask me how I know.
