Curious,
How light is the truck now without the bed.
I will probably be getting a regular cab or extended cab here in the states and doing the same thing for a rear bed.
I would like to tow my rig with my 3rd gen and was wondering if that set up makes the truck significantly lighter.

Cheers for all the comments guys did a few hours on the grinder last night and have organised a plasma for tonight so hopefully will make short work of the rest of the cutting
The new tray is actually heavier than the original styleside was, the added weight actually made the truck drive a lot better. My tray has a lot of showy stuff that added extra weight though as thats what I wanted, there is no reason why you couldnt build it light to suit your needs.

You think it was the materials use or more the design that made it heavy, or maybe a mixture of both?

Definately a mixture of both, the tray floor is steel plate instead of lighter materials and other things like that all add to it. It takes at least two of us to lift it and I would estimate it weighs 100-150Kgs (200lbs-300lbs)

can't wait to see the finished product.

why would you take the 2.8L Turbo D. and replace it with a less fuel effecient V8 petrol? besides more power obviously. Looks good by the way. but since I now live in Belize, i see those EVERYWHERE

Because it had a 3rz not a 2.8d this model came out with the 3.0L diesel and I wouldnt have bought one of them either. Diesels suck arse and are gutless slow smoky pieces of . Yeh sure they use a little less fuel, but they cost more to service, require more services and cost a load to repair if something goes wrong. For the price of one diesel injector pump rebuild I can have 2 Lexus V8s.

Long story short they suck they are common over here and I have had them when working in the mines imo they are not what they are cracked up to be. They are a small capcity diesel with bugger all power.

Boof isn't a Deisel fan, he bags my little 3.4 Deisel I have in my 40 series. It walks everywhere, just doesn't have enough juice to clear the 38's in muddy clay !!
Maybe I should start charging him for all the work I do on his rig. LOL.

We spent a couple of hours doing a few bits and pieces with the result being that once the Longs show up and the centre is here I will rebuild the diff and go from there. Huge thanks to Dan for helping me out as usual he is always willing to help out a novice like me with the welding Who knows we might even get this thing mobile this year again now
