Got a question, I have a Clarke 80E 90 amp welder and I cant figure out if I have the correct welding rods or not. I have 6013 i believe, but I can never get it to spark and put down any welds. It just sparks and I loose spark as I start to move it. Really frustrating . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

 

6013 is an easy rod to start. general use

you getting good ground? are free of rust and paint?

 

Just what size 6013 are you trying to run??

a 3/32" rod is pushing it for that little welder.

You do know How to weld??

Those welders are a royal pain they cause more frustration.

Some women gave me one I used a 10 pound sledge Hammer on it . Almost better then Sex

If you can find a used Lincoln AC/DC Tombstone or a Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC you will be much further ahead.

 

Thinking Im not getting a good ground. will try to mess with it tomorrow. I know how to weld, Just havent done it in a few years. Joy of working in law enforcement and low funds. Ill see what size I got, Thinking it is 3/32" Might try to get some 1/16" for it.

 

Prep work is the biggest thing to get Good penetration. I always chrome every thing out were the ground clamp is, then chrome whatever piece is being welded. The current will flow like butter than way.
If your good and know how to weld, you can do a lot with that little 80 amp. I just bought by first welder, every one said to get like a 180 amp 220volt. I bought a 110v 140 amp lincoln and I've already welded 3/8ths plate with it, single pass. Good luck

 

Im personally not fond of any welder that can be called a hot box without argument but the guy above me is right prep prep prep is 90% of the job in any good weld. But consistency is just as important even more so when your welding anything that has to take a load.

If you do not have to rush through, do not do more than on pass in the same area at a time. Do one weld then move to a weld on the other side of the build. If you over heat the metal then allow it to cool to quickly you run into increased risk of breakage.
