1st Gen Winch Plate
My friend is going to bend me a tube bumper. I want to mount a winch to this bumper.
I'm guessing a plate would be the best idea but no one makes a plate for the 82, there all 84+. Fabbing a plate should be pretty easy. I'm assuming bolt it to the bumper holes and maybe weld it in a few places too?
Or will the 84+ plates fit with some mods?

Since it looks like you're pretty much starting from scratch, why not get one from BudBuilt and build everything off of it?

In my opinion, there's no good way to build a bumper for the 1st gen truck wihout boxing the front x-member and tying the bumper into an engine cage. I have an 82, and after my previous bumper got tweaked, I built a real bumper and tied it all together. This isn't welded to the frame, but rather bolted thru the boxed x-member with 3/4 grade 8 bolts, then flanged into the engine cage with eight 3/8 grade 8 bolts. I've winch fullsize Chevy's with this bumper, as well as my own truck at all angles without a wimper. The aftermarket crap, like Allpro sells, will not hold up to seroius trail abuse with only the two flimsy mounts on the bottom and their weld on bracing. You stand the truck up on the tailgate and have to winch, the downward pull of the winch will stress the mount to much and rip it off the frame. Build it right the first time and be done with it!

Sorry about crappy pic. I'll post another if you want.

You have the skills to build that bumper/cage you should be able to weld a butch winch plate to it. It looks like if you weld to it it shouldn't go anywhere. Remember the strongest bumper/winch mount is onlt as strong as the frame it's mounted to. It also sounds like you have plenty of grade 8 bolts that it isn't going to sheer the bolts.

Here is a winch plate that you could bolt or weld to your bumper. http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT57396.aspx This is also cool. Removable winch. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...t=winch+bumper

Thanks for the link for the plate. However Bud Built's plate comes out to be MUCH cheaper with the shipping and everything compared to the Warn one. Plus it's smaller overall.
I've seen that removeable winch set up and it's pretty sweet but not for. I don't want to lug an 90lbs winch around or go swimming if I'm stuck where I'll have to do a rear pull.
