So, my '94 4Runner has been down due to a problem with the rear differential. I am in Dior need of it right now and lack the money to fix it. My buddy is suggesting that we remove the rear drive shaft, lock the hubs and drive it in 4x4. I know it's not ideal but I'm about to scrap it. Is this a horrible idea, or can it hold for a week or so for sorry trips?

 

You don't say exactly what is wrong with your rear diff.

It might be possible that even with the driveshaft removed, or disconnected, the rear end could seize up and lock the rear wheels up.

Not a good idea to try this.

For getting off the trail or limping home, yes, you can drive in "makeshift front-wheel-drive". But the IFS front drivetrain isn't meant to go much above 25mph, and not for long periods of time.

What is wrong with the rear differential? What is it doing that it shouldn't, or not doing what it should?

Where are you located? Someone may have a spare for cheap.
