They should be fine. Lots of guys are running them on 3rd gens.
Here are a couple:

I'll look for a few more.

Got all the unnecessary bolt on/broken stuff removed as well as dialed in a few little details...(misc. dash lights, cleaning all the nicotine from the AC vents *blech*)
I've decided to build a custom stinger for this truck rather than steal the stock one from Mammas SC. If she likes it, I'll build her one too.
Also pretty sure I'm going to do the Revtech 3" spacer lift and run BFG AT's.

Yay! 14.96 MPG in general driving around. Ran some errands around town, couple of trips to work that are about 2/3 freeway and that is the outcome. I think that is a number I can at least work with. Seems reasonable that I can squeeze another 1 to 1.5 MPG outta her somewhere. I think I've got a line on some new rubber. I'll know for sure tomorrow.

Hey Punkelberg, save the money and do some more research on the types of lifts available for the 3rd gen. I currently have the RevTek spacer lift on the front and if you give me some time, I'll just give it to you. A few people around have done the 1st gen Tundra bilstein front strut/ shock...that's really the direction I'm heading for now...with three choices of ride height on the front strut and valving being nearly identical. Also, the lower balljoints and outside tierod end from the 1gen Tacomas are a direct bolt in with more beef...however, they have to be done at the same time. Just giving a heads up on what I've come up with so far. I'm rebuilding the front end joints and didn't find this out till I already had ordered my parts...hind site 20/30...??? Um, ok!

What would be a ballpark cost for parts on the Tundra swap?

I'm still torn between those, and the Dunlop Mud Rovers or Goodyear Wranglers MT's.

When I got her.

Today after a date with some soap and water and de-stickered.

The new (to me) meat.

Looks great Mike!
I'm back in town so any time you want head out for a shake-down run let me know!
Looks like you need to swap over to some manual hubs too - I did mine, very easy, but with the 2nd gens there is an extra step to deal with the vacuum thing - Ted knows!

pretty nice looking. If I can scoop them up for a good price, I'll probably end up with the Falkens too. I want to start going up north a bit more with the runner so i think the WildPeaks will add a bit of comfort to the freeway drive, yet be capable enough offroad to accomplish what I'll want to do.
I do however wish that it would rain every single day here in AZ just to find some mud. I'm just worried I'll regret not having mud tires for a the few occassions that I'll actually need them.

Thanks for the props guys.
Jeff, I was halfway into snapping up some manny hubs when I had a reality check and told myself to "SLOW DOWN" there bub. I want to slowly evaluate the truck and make very thoughtful deliberate decisions. I definately wanted to burn that first tank of gas to see what my starting point was. Had it returned something abysmal like 8/10/12 MPG, I would have really had to think about whether I was even going to keep the truck. I mentioned above that I would like to see 16 MPG out of it. At just a hair shy of 15 MPG, I think the rig has a real chance to provide what I want out of it. I didn't want to start dropping cash into it if it was a lost cause.
For now I want to see what if any difference these new tires make. Then I will pull the lights off the roof to see what if any difference that might make. After that I will have to start spending money to try things out. Manual hubs is one of those items. While I'm sure it will reduce wear and tear on the individual parts and simplify the operation of the truck in the field, I'm not convinced it will provide any significant benefit in fuel efficiency. Did you see much change in yours? Or did you check it?
In a perfect world I would have found replacement tires a little skinnier than the ones I ended up with and they would have been on alloy wheels to lighten the load on the powertrain. Alas, that was not the case, but I still was able to make some progress in that regard.
Another idea I have had is to replace the K&N air filter with an OEM setup to see what that might do. My theory is this: The engine wants to run at a certain air to fuel mixture/ratio. If the K&N provides more air, the computer will sense that and dump more fuel into the equation to keep everything in the zone that it's been programmed to maintain. While that might provide more power, I'm not sure that it will provide more efficiency. And let's face it, these 3.0s aren't going to win any drag races anyway...ever... period... and after years of driving a big heavy truck with a 22re, I'm used to slow. The problem with that idea is that it will be a PITA to accomplish and if I decide to stay with the K&N, the OEM stuff I will have to buy will likely be headed for the trash bin. Anyone with input on this? My 3.0 knowledge is slim to none, so I'm certainly willing to listen to ideas.
Thanks for reading the ramble.

So I picked up the Lexus wheels last night from Shaun, (thanks man, it was great to meet you and I appreciate the hook up!) got 'em mounted and balanced this morning and ($70 to Discount tire for lug-nuts later)the truck looks great! All the 55-72mph shimmys are gone! Stupid steel wheels....I knew that was the issue! (ok, hoped REALLY hard)
So now the SC'd truck is done save for 5125's as soon as my rollover lawyer ponies up some $$!
On to the (Grey-brown-green-anthrisyte????) truck...keeping the factory wheels for sure, 90% positive I'll go with BFG AT KO's.
Not sure yet if it's better to rebuild the steering rack or just put a re-manufactured on in...I've always done re-man before, but I had more $ then...
plugs, wires, fluids and all that fun stuff. On the fence about air filter....I had a 96 4runner before with an ICON coilover/extended upper lift and 33" mudders that was dead stock save for an Autozone ricer style cone filter tucked near the fender hole...damn thing pulled a 16:80 1/4 mile at speedworld and won me a case of beer!
Mild lift (spacers) on the front only for a while (pre-runner style) and some OME springs in the rear as soon as mamma leaves her purse unattended.
I'll snap a pic of the SC with the Lexus wheels in the AM....for now, I'm outa Jameson so....bed time!

Glad to see them in a good home. Looks good.
So you actually saw an improvement with the K&N. Good to know. Thanks for the info.
In my tundra I was getting 14-15mpg general driving and with the K&N intake it took me up to 16-17mpg on the same route. Thinking about doing exaust on it also, but like how quiet it is with the stock exaust. I was talking to an older guy at the gas station and he had intake and mild exaust and was getting 20+ mpg so that would be a plus! But with that being said, I don't know if the factory airbox would help with mileage
