Are you going to Butcher Jones on Sunday? I might be able swing that as long as I don't break anything Saturday.

Where do you guys usually hang out when you get there? I can probably meet you guys at any of the coves if I can't be ready to roll at 6 - which is highly unlikely that I will.

Do you guys have CB's? If so what channel? I'll let you know when I get there - if I come out.

Back Road to Crown King has been neutered. Its still has all of the challenge spots with bypasses - those are still pretty cool. But the main obstacle at the mine where you make the 90 deg turn left and start the real climb has been removed. All of that up to Crown king has been graded to allow for better fire access.

If you are familiar with CK, the last obstacle *now* is the ledge immediately after a river crossing. Still a good trail, but except for the last area with a bypass, I would call it moderate if you are locked and probably tough if you have open diffs.

I'd love to get out to Sycamore. I was there on my dirt bike and it seemed like it would be great wheeling. I've been to BJ, but aside from the playground in the central area which seemed more traction limited, I couldn't find the tough stuff. That would be great to see too!

EDIT - there has been rumors that Trail #42 by Bartlett Lake may get some funding to clean up and reopen the trail. I sent an email to the forest service office of that area. We'll see.

FWIW I have an extra '82 Supra AFM 22250-43110. I found a place that had three of them and my one buddy hit some financial issues so he needs to pass on a 'want' vs. 'need'.

They were $80 shipped each which was the best I could find, so that's what I want to get locally before it goes on ebay. I'm in NW Peoria.

While I'm at it, I also have a set of doors in decent shape, door glass, an "OK" gray center console, rear gray lap belts, electric window regulators, and a lot of stock IFS parts...I think even the 4.10 front diff.

All for 1st gen 4Runner / 2nd gen pickup

I'll be hitting up butcher jones tomorrow, don't know too many areas out there. But stopping at the first cove for a bit, I'll be in my red 88 toy so if any of you see me stop and say hi! I don't know a lot of people into wheeling and it sucks going alone... Haha

Looks like the past few weekends there have been alot of last minute random trips out to Butcher Jones. Would anyone be interested in an organized run out there next weekend? I know Butcher Jones very well, I can take us out to the 5 coves. Any 4wd truck can make it out there with no problems.

Let me know who is interested and what day would be best for everyone. I'd like to see if we can get a good idea of who's in by Friday.

From what I understand, ya want 5:29's with 35's - did you get in touch with Will at Sierra Expeditions yet? He can help you guys out. They sell and install gears too. They did my truck and I couldn't be happier with the work they did and how my truck performs.

As Jeff mentions 5.29 is the general consensus for 35's. There is also a general consensus out there to step up one size for automatic trannies due to power loss inherent to autos. Best bet would be to determine what he has now. (or had as original equipment)

Here is a chart to figure out what he has for gears now.
http://www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/t...ion-18588.html

Here is a calculator to come up with a new size.
http://www.offroaders.com/info/tech-...alculators.htm

I ran a quickie trial assuming he had 31's and factory 4.88 which put him at 5.51, almost exactly in the middle of 5.29 and 5.71 He could then choose between 5.29 for decent performance and better economy or 5.71 for better performance and somewhat decreased economy. Of course these numbers would change if he had different equipment originally so you need to find out.

IIRC my swap was the same thing where my calculation fell in the middle. I chose to step up instead of down and it works well but I often wonder what if...

The "best" gears seem to change over time so check in with Wil or ZUK when the time gets near. I believe ZUK is no longer doing set ups but I imagine he is still willing to offer advice. Seems Nitro gears are the choice currently.

Finally, if it is determined that your friends truck has Toyota factory 4.88's there is an issue with re-gearing the rear 8 inch diff that you need to research. The upside is that 4.88 diffs/gears are a sought after used part and he should be able to sell them easily.
