Arizona Roll Call

In response: The stock brake lines should be plenty for just about any and all braking needs with stock wheels and tire sizes. The Braided stainless steel lines wont allow any expansion like the rubber items do which would lead to a hard feel to the pedal. If you're really set on SS brake lines then do em' but unless you're rolling on 35's or greater, I would consider them over kill. Depending upon application (your vehicle if it's 4cyl) you can always upgrade your master cylinder to the V6 master along with the calipers too. With this, you're gonna need the V6 rotor's as well....if I remember correctly. As far as "Hawks" are concerned, I use them on my 04' F150 5.4. However, with our vehicles, I'd recommend Performance Friction. Their a Carbon Metallic pad that I've used for years...here's a link: http://www.performancefriction.com/Parts-Finder.aspx
You'll have to go through and find the right part no.s for your application. I use to do alot of snowboarding and the regular pads I used would start to heat up and smell...1/2 way down the mountain...no I dont like riding the brakes but the midgrade items from autozone were to blame. Put PF pads on and I put them to the test on the next trip down and was really pleased. No noticible brake fade or brake smell on the test run and the hotter they seemed to get, the better they seemed to work. Their pads went on all of the vehicles I had from that point on. I'm testing the Hawk's out and have eaten through 1 set of rotors on the F150 already. Those rotors are over $150.00 a piece...Ford incorporated the wheel bearing unit in this design...so mucho money to replace each time. Once this set wears out, I'll be going after the PF pads as replacements and replacing the rotors again. Hope this helps out a bit.

awesome, thanks for the info. I never thought about using the v6 m/c or calipers. Right now the truck is on 33's and the brakes are less than stellar. it stops, but it just seems to take longer than I feel is reasonable. I'll give the v6 m/c and pads a shot and see if that meets my needs before running stainless lines.

2 things - make sure your drum brakes are adjusted properly. Its free. Try some sort of pad upgrade first. Its cheap and easy.
Daily driver or weekend warrior? If you go with a v6 master cylinder, you need to also add the v6 booster. The larger 1" m/c needs more assist than the 13/16" to generate the same pressure.

This should help you out a bit. But more info on what your driving would help us help you better.

updated my sig. funny, I'm on other forums, and this is the first forum I've ever heard of anyone using the signature for legitimate information and not a "look at me" section after every post.
The Runner is just a weekend warrior. I'd never be able to DD the thing since I drive so far to work each day. If I had it my way, it would get trailored to every trail head I wanted to run.
again, thanks for all the info guys. it's nice to have a forum where folks help out. I'll let you know how it goes after this weekend.

as for what's next, well I'm still a noob to 4x4 so that's up in the air. The brakes are a sure thing, then tires. I think lighting will be next on the list of things to-do after that. Eventually, I'm going to (attempt to) paint it black with a punisher style skull on the hood. I have all the proper equipment to do the job, so why not give it a shot. License plate is going to read ANIAL8R once the paint is done.

Phxheat02, glad the 4runner is working out for you. Sorry to hear about the hub, I just repacked the bearings the weekend before you got it while I was replacing all of the cv boots, and everything seemed fine at the time. Paint scheme sounds cool, but you better get on that personalized plate, I just ordered one and it seems like most of the good ones are already taken. As for the brakes, several great suggestions above, but you might try simply bleeding them for the meantime if an upgrade is not in the immediate future. I've found that on most of my old yota's bleeding the brakes and checking the ignition timing becomes routine maintenance.

HA! Turns out you can't resurface the head of this particular interference engine due to such tight tolorances to begin with! I wish the machine shop knew that before they milled it! Apparently the valves and pistons have been lightly bumping into each other, not enough to damage either of them, but eventually the intake cam just gave out. Anyway, I'm fed up with it and don't have time to mess with it with school starting monday so I put it in the shop today to get it fixed with a warranty.

Still a headache... I'm paying for it. Tires and other parts for Dicey are going to have to wait now.
Doesn't look like I have any pics of my welds, I'll have to get some in the morning. Hopefully I'll be welding on my new creeper joint shackle hangers this week.

Sucks! Sorry to hear it's coming out of your pocket.

Did you want some help? I have a feeling you've had enough of my obnoxious attitude to last for a month or so. But let me know if you haven't.
