coolest thing ever
Actually, The Pickle is the coolest thing ever! And turbos actually run kind of hot, so it won't be cool at all...

The engine management Jeremy will be running controls boost level, ignition timing, ignition retard, boost retard, fuel cut, fuel maps, wastegate pulsing and/or functions, data logging, etc. It's a stripped down race EFI computer. With stock injectors and the IC that he' running I'm predicting 300+hp levels, but we'll have to tone that down to around 260 or so to keep the diffs, axle shafts, and driveshafts happy.

Yeah, I figured that he would end up with a custom computer job like that but doesn't that require a laptop etc to change the boost? It's just cool to be able to touch a button and bam have an extra 50hp and then keep less stress on the running gear during normal driving. I mean, when your at a light you can be like, hold on... let me get my computer out... Though, I was thinking about this when he was saying that he had money... now I guess replacing the turbo is a bit higher on the list of things to do.

ive got a laptop i run almost fulltime as my "jukebox" since i dont have an MP3 compatible CD player yet so its not that huge a change for me. Anyway jason was talking something about having some sort of display for showing boost pressure, temp readings etc but i dunno if it has touchscreen and/or the capability for changing settings in the engine management on the fly or not. That would be pretty damn sweet tho

Hmm...
My guess would be that the screen wouldn't let you do that, and it would be something like the dysplay that comes in the R36 Skyline. If so that is one hell of a computer setup he is getting you...

LCD screen in the dash... About $150-200.. Installation... whatever I make Jeremy pay me....

Touchscreen? Hah... about a $100 overlay for the aforementioned screen and you have your touchscreen display.

On the fly boost changes? It'll do it, and I'll set it up to do it, but it's no special thing... just a different set of values stored on the EEPROM. I don't recommend playing around like you guys are talking about unless you're

A. Racing for money @ a sanctioned race
B. Running HIGH octane (115 plus)
C. Want to blow up your motor.

The engine management that we're installing is not a barometric sensitive system nor does it account for changes in the atmospheric condition. This taken into account, the aforementioned stored values would be considered " safe " only for conditions that exist similarly to the ones that were present during tuning of said engine management. I.E. if it's 60 degrees outside when we tune it, the car will run best @ 60 degrees, worse @ 90 degress, and really lean @ anything less than 60 degrees. To counteract this phenomenon, we simply " build in " a safety net in the tuning by running the car rich all the time. Gas mileage suffers, but it's better to be safe than burn a hole through a piston IMHO.

what about tuning it three times (one for summer, one for winter, and one for spring/fall) and saving them. Assuming money for dyno-time isnt an issue is that something people really do or is it overkill ?

It's doable, and many teams do so for their race cars. Most street car people live w/ it (except myself and several other people I know. ) and just build in that saftey net I was referring to. You're talking $300 plus each time you tune it... So about $1200 total to setup your ignition and fuel maps. Even then, you're talking about many variables:

1. Fuel quality and octane
2. Air density
3. Air temperature
4. Humidity
5. Altitude

All these variables will affect ultimate power output, and indirectly affect the " material " (air) that the motor digests.

when we get it running then debates like this are more relevant Only problem i see with only tuning it once is its probably (hopefully) still going to be pretty damn cold outside when we do it. Then two months later its gonna 90 degrees out NC is the only damn place you use the AC and heat full blast in the same day

ohh yea, and did you get a chance to call ARB ? you never called me back ( huge suprise )

Once we all get set-up and ready again, we need to try and plan a fall run to Tellico, nothing too hard so we all make it back in one peice, but I sure would like to see some new terrain.

Jermey did you get my PM?

Your ARB will not work with your SAS. I requires cutting the bumper in half and rewelding it to the frame
When this Motor is done I want to see some serious mud slinging.

Damn, thats going to be one heck of an engine management system when you guys finish. I can't wait to see it in action. Kinda makes me think of that video of the Lifted F-250 4Door Long bed demolishing a WS6 in the 1/4mile. Priceless...

Glad to know you guys are going to have this solid axle swap thing down so when I do mine it will be a piece of cake. Sucks about the ARB... I assume that pertains to TJM bumpers as well? Though, That will just make it even stronger right? The only problem about that is when you get in a wreck.

Do you guys have the intercooler in yet? How are you doing the piping? Are you getting a shop to do it for you or what? Is it off the new evo and did you get the squirter kit that went with it??

ps, Jon you might want to put an html tag in your sig to clean it up a bit. Just a thought...

ARB makes a bumper for solid axle 4runners, they just dont sell them directly through US retailers. Its a special order item so it takes awhile

the intercooler is probably going to end up somewhere directly behind and below the ARB bumper for protection. Plan on my SAS coming in about 2 weeks. I have a complete axle with hy-steer, all i need to buy still are new brake lines, shocks, shackles, and a driveshaft. Id like to have the bumper at the same time just incase it takes some minor modification to fit while the truck is back at the welder/fab guy's place

I wanna see the freight quote on that thing. . Jermey I might be needing you and your fab guy to help me do my hy-steer set-up when the time comes(soon, as soon as I can get my 86' Runner down here so I can rip the driveshafts(LT driveshafts needed) and IFS box). I have no idea how this whole steering thing works yet. Also what system did you end up going with, The Sky Manu. of the All Pro???

i got a smoking deal on a complete, rebuilt, ready to bolt up front axle with brand new allpro hysteer and everything else already on it(keeping the other axle i bought for spare parts) . I'm going to pick up the new one tommorow. Since they are the same price id rather get the sky hy-steer but i just couldnt pass up on this deal.

i believe you dont pay anything extra for shipping. They send the bumper over here just like all the other ones, it just takes longer.

Lemme know what you need done as far as cutting and welding goes and ill talk to my friend cliff. i read the ALLPRO instructions for mounting the IFS steering box, definetly not something you could do at home
