I have a 97 4runner. The back hatch will not open. This happened all of a sudden. Worked one day then nothing. I need help please how can I take the back panel off from inside? Because I need to put my spare tire. But I need to open the back hatch to get to the tire. I am so frustrated and trying not to go to the dealership.

 

Mine used to do that. Try pulling the handle and giving it a good bump with your other hand at the bottom of the hatch where the mechanism is. That worked for me. Once you get it open, spray some silicone lubricant on the latch. I haven't had any more problems in 2+ years.
