Yes, S&J engines. They are a WA engine builder. The previous owner put the motor in through them. After all this has happened I have come to find out that they have a ˟˟˟˟ ton of complaints through the BBB and terrible reviews on google because of people having similar experiences with their engines.

They are out of Spokane, WA. Motor had less than 20k miles on it. Motor already blew a head gasket in the first 10k. They blamed it on the installer and refused to cover it. I'm quickly finding out these guys are scumbags of the purest form.

Was the motor you did the HG on yourself ruined after that?

It's too bad Engnbldr doesn't do long blocks. They have great customer service and from what I understand their heads are some of the best around, no engine blocks though.

Agreed on Engnbldr, on my 85 I ended up rebuilding the engine myself but used all his kits .

Great quality!

No I knew when I popped it and got it towed home and right away drained the oil an poured fresh stuff in to help displace any water that got in to the crank case. I ended up doing a log block swap because I had a spare motor. But I do plan on using my swapped out motor for my next rig. 85 4runner if the stars ever align.

Well I think I've decided it is not worthwhile to put another 22re in my runner. I've decided to go 3rz. I've found these guys down in la centa who will swap in a 100k - 120k 3rz for me. All said and done $3700 plus tax. Or I can get a completely re-manufactured 3rz from them swapped in for $6500. What do you guys think? Am I nuts putting this much money into my 4runner? Here is their site: http://www.nwteamyota.com/

I think you nuts for not doing the 3.4 swap same amount of work. Much better power and close on mileage. From what I understand the motor mounts on the 3.0 & 3.4 are in the same location for the swap. Not sure if an adapter plate for the bell housing is needed. It's probably one of the better v6's Toyota ever made for a truck. Also with the increased torque you will have an advantage on having or not having to regear.

On nwteamyota I have talked with them once or twice. Seemed nice and knowledgeable bought some freeze plugs from them. Fast shipping. Nice brass plugs.
Hope this helps

If I had a V6 truck I would of course be opting for the 3.4. However I have a 4cyl truck. To do a 3.4 I would need a new transmission as well. I'm already re-geared to 4.88.

I'd would look around for a little on Craigslist and maybe get lucky find a wrecked one. But 150 ponies out of a 4 banger is pretty good

Yeah the problem is a. I live in a condo so I have no garage. B. The swap is intensive due to the wiring.

Go for it. I say. The 3RZ is the right choice for you and as for cost I spent over $7000 doing my deisel swap and I did all the work myself. So if you are crazy to spend half that on a motor swap then where does that put me?

LOL good point Nathan. Plus I will have mine good to go in a couple of weeks! Did you fully rebuild your motor when you swapped? How did it cost you that much?

I did not fully rebuild it, and now I wish I had, cause it is leaking oil from the head gasket. I did replace a few critical components like water pump, timing belt, oil seals, had the starter and alternator rebuilt. The half-cut I bought was $4000, the bellhousing was $1000, the transmission was $1000, the engine service parts were $500 and I spent $500 on stainless exhaust tube. It adds up fast when you have to have all the parts shipped from Toyota in Japan.

I would recommend checking out http://www.toyonlyswaps.com, they are in Oregon (i towed down my 4Runner with a Uhaul and dolly) but I got a 3.4 swap done in my Runner (was a 3.0 equipped) for just a hair over 4k.

They do the 3RZ also so would be worth checking with them to at least compare pricing.

Or I could sell ya my 88 for 3500 lol

Yep sure does. The truck isn't as nice as yours though, but here is the build thread on it.

Toyonlyswaps are a great bunch, super helpful even after they did the install.

Remind me again why are you selling it after having just paid all that money to do the 3.4 swap?

So after talking to Cliff at Toyonlyswaps I am even more torn on my decision than before. He really seemed to know his stuff and even recommended that I do the 3.4. It looks like it will run me about $5500 through them as they will have to switch out my trans as well. The difference is of course it would be a used engine not a re-man. They also are an additional 3 hours away. I'm really liking that I can literally not find a single thing bad said about them anywhere. Then again I can't find anything negative about TeamYota either.

Just not the direction I wanted to go. As much as I love the 1st gens, I wanted something a bit more comfortable and and in a more ready state.

It's a great truck, just decided I wanted a later generation

Yeah Cliff is awesome Totally know their stuff.

Mine was used also, but for a nominal amount they were able to do the timing belt/water pump when they did the swap. They also made sure to get the right engine for me, the one they used was the second they had located for my install. The first was not in good enough condition.

I like that they were as picky as I would be

Plus they took awesome pics of the swap for me and posted it on their FB lol.

Yeah I'm leaning more and more towards tos. What did you have to put down for a deposit?
