1990 4runner miss/hesitation

Hi all.

This is my 1st question on this forum. I just bought my son a 1990 4runner with the v6 engine. It cannot pass smog and has a miss. We have done a total tune up. Things got better but then we did a compression test and found the #4 cylinder read 15psi all others were 125-135psi. We added the tablespoon of oil and it did not come up. So what i've read, that eliminates the piston and rings but says we have a prob with with the valves. My real question is, do we need to do a head job or could it be just need a valve adjust. We bought this truck from a guy who just did major work to the engine. Brand new "blue" gasket material on all. Any answers would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

You will more than likely need a complete valve job. You cannot grind the exhaust valves as it will cause them to burn again quicker. They muct be replaced. You can grind the intakes. Very very common problem with those motors. If the compression wasnt so low, you might be able to adjust them, but with it being only 15psi...its already done. A good head job using toyota parts and gaskets will make it right
