Winch Wiring Questions
I am about to install a Warn XD9000 into my TJM-T15.
I have heard many folks talk about putting the control box under the hood.
The leads from the winch to the control box are pretty darn short.
Those that have done this (or seen it done) could you post just how you did it and did you have to lengthen the leads at all? Any Pics??
Also, it looks like there is no way to wire a fuse in line with a winch, and did not see any recommendation in the instructions for a fuse. Is one necessary? I don't like the idea of anything wired outside of the protection of a fuse. Is there anything in the control box that protects the wiring? It seems that even if there was, the wire between the battery and the control box would be unprotected...
Give me your best ideas!
Thanks,

I put mine inside. I used some flanged plastic grommets thru the firewall for the cables to ensure there could be NO chafing. I made up some new cables (we have the wire and hydraulic crimper at work...) rather than extend the old ones (could have extended them just as easily, but I like things neat and clean) I did not fuse it either, although that really is a good idea. They do make fuses that big (they bolt inline) but they are spendy.

Ian, did you replace the original cables with longer ones to make the box reach?
Nice looking installs guys, though with all the fun Phil was having it is a bit tough to tell.
Any others?
Is there a write up anywhere?

If you don't have the crimpers to make up longer cables yourself, you can buy battery cables at your local auto parts stores premade, or go to most any RV dealer and ask them to make some for you. Have the measurements you need and maybe take one cable with you so they get the size. Write-up? :pat: With new cables in hand, take the 2 screws off the relay box cover, remove the lid, and replace the cables with the longer ones - one at a time. Mark each one as you do it so you know which was which. Install the winch, mount the relax box. Connect the cables according to the winch instructions. Go wheeling.

I am thinking of moving the control box back under the hood.
Does anyone know what gauge cable I would need for a 4' - 6' distance from the winch to the control box? Also, do I need to upgrade the battery leads to the control box as well?
