Used 8k lb Warn Winch for $200

I know a guy willing to sell a used 8,000 lb Warn winch for $200. All I know is that it has cable on it and a remote. I don't know anything about winches other than the fact that I'd love to have one. A winch would have allowed me to get myself unstuck the last two times I've been stupid enough to get stuck.

Question is what do I need to look for to make sure this is a good deal? The guy said the winch had been used a good bit. I'm also pretty sure the winch has the solenoid and battery cables with it.

Is it hard to rebuild a Warn winch and is that costly?

Thanks for the help so I can avoid getting taken...

A warn 8274 came on my 85 when I bought it. It had cable and a remote but wouldn't work. $240.00 later it works fine.
I had to replace the electrical motor and rebuilt the drum and carrier while I was there. If it had not been a Warn, I would have replaced it.

Parts are readily available for Warn's. Warn will even rebuild it for a charge.

Thanks, HarrisonP. I sent you a PM. Hehe, I also need to store your cell on my phone. Last time I got stuck was in Francis Marion. It had just rained for 2 or 3 days and I buried the driver's side tires in a 'little' puddle that didn't have a bottom.

Looked at the winch today

The winch is similar to the newer M8274 series.

Here is the data I pulled off of the nameplate:

M MRV-B-4
V 15877
V12

S 059

Here are some new pictures off of the web of what I was looking at:

It's in very used condition but it works and will do what I need it to do. My only question is whether this will fit on a TJM, ARB, or Warn bumper.

Only problem with that is that it won't be able to fit into the ARB/TJM. You would need a winch w/o an integrated control box for these bumpers. I am not ure about the warn bumper, but your only other option with a winch like that would be to get a custom bumper built.

The TJM and ARB bumpers only accept the Warn M Series style winches with a separate controller box.

Both of these bumpers also have winch install feet forward, bottom forward into the clam shell, so the winch you are asking about will not fit and if you were to cut open the clamshell these bumpers use, they would loose all there strength.

To run the 8274 you would need to build a custom bumper with an open front and a bottom mounting plate. The TJM/ARB bumpers will not work.

I have never looked at this style winch very close, but it looks to me that the winch pictured has the mounting surface faceing forward. Is this right or am I just seeing things?

*edit* I didn't see that in your post above sschaefer

Yes - the 8274 mounts forward.

You should buy the winch, clean it up and then sell it for a profit. Then get yourself a winch that will fit the bumper you have. Thats a pretty good deal for a working winch.

I take it that you want it bad enough to pay shipping to your address? This thing must weight a 100 lbs or so...
