tjm/winch questions

I have a new TJM-15 but I need to get some items first to install the warn in there. I need a few things but not sure what to buy. If I can get some suggestions that would be great!

first I need the right size bolts to go through the bumper and into the winch. I know they should be grade 8 bolts but the length and size I have no idea. I need to get some synthetic rope and then an aluminum fairlead. I can fit 100' of 3/8 on this winch. I'd like to use the same shop for everything, but the prices that I have been able to find so far are too high for my budget (www.winchline.com). What's the current best deal on synthetic rope? PS. I don't want to splice the rope myself as I am unsure of my splicing ability for such a critical safety component.

Last for an aluminum fairlead the prices seem all over the place. I'd like something simple and good.
Oh yeah finally the thimble vs hook debate, I'd like to get the one that is safest and strongest.
cheapest is good too but safety first. thanks again for all your help!

The mounting bolts and nuts for my Warn M8000 came with the winch. I can't help you with your other questions, because I am still running the aircraft cable and roller fairlead that came with my winch.

The manual for my Warn M8000 lists the mounting bolts as 3/8-16, 1.25" long.

Yes, my Warn 9000 winch uses 3/8x16 (coarse thread) bolts. If in doubt, check the diameter of the nuts in the mounting holes. You can usually slip a nut out of the base and take it to the hardware store to match up the right bolt. For length, measure the thickness of the mounting flange on the bumper and the depth the nut is in the winch base and get the next longest bolt.

I got my UHMW winch rope from Rock Stomper:

I did 90' of 5/16" on the winch drum plus a 50' extension in 5/16". Keeps the drum less full for side pulls and the extension is nice since you don't have to pull it out and spool it back in for long pulls.

T- my buddy (who lives in Seattle) had a spool of line he was piecing out a while back. He's a boat guy, and spliced it up for me. I'm not sure if he still has any left.

Honestly, if you're just doing light wheeling, I'd just stick with the steel line, steel fairlead. It can be used in a safe fashion, is cheaper. Don't feel like you've got to go synthetic because all the cool kids have it...

As much as I'd like synthetic line on my Ramsey, I can't justify spending that much on it. And I kinda like not having to worry about my winch line rubbing up against trees and bark and things. And if Im pulling somebody else out with a lesser truck with few recovery points I may have to pull from their frame or crossmember and have the line touching another steel part that may or may not me somewhat sharp. I would worry about a synthetic line in that situation.

skinsfan is right, I wouldn't buy a synthetic line, they are horribly expensive right now. Maybe in a few years it will be worth it

Synthetic winch rope is kinda abrasion sensitive.
