Steering

I have been searching for a while and am finding great stuff on this forum. I have a 84 truck that I want to turn into a wheeling rig I have lots of mechanical experience but little wheeling experience. Now for the question, my power steering pump decided after 25 years it was done. I would like to upgrade to high steer and hydro assist at some time in the future but at the moment it is not necessary, and being a poor college student I would like to wait until it is necessary and I have the cash to upgrade. Now I have found all sorts of high pressure pumps and hydro assist kits but will they work on a stock steering system until I upgrade the rest later? Or should I just bite the bullet and do everything now and not eat for a few months (I could afford to loose some weight anyway).

Sorry for the novel and thanks for any and all help or advice.

Pumps will work fine, the assist kits would require modifying the push-pull steering box you now have then later if you go to x-over, you'll need to modify that box as well.
