I need your guys opinion on either a sm465 tranny or a turbo 350. Im putting it in a 91 4 runner. what are the ups and downs with these two swaps? how many of you have done this and would you do something different next time? Thanks

 

I went with the auto in my Cruiser. I like not having to use the clutch. Floor shifters are avail.

SM465 is a good tranny for crawling (very low 1st). Clutch linkage is something to figure out (was mechanical in the Chev truck) Shifter is usually far forward in most V8 swaps unless you bury the rear of the engine into the firewall. You could use the Chev transfercase......no adapters to buy


I have a SM420 for my 2nd cruiser. Bought a SM 465 (2 wheel) in case I wanted to pull the auto, but never did it. REALLY wish I had put in an OD transmission (auto or 5 speed)

 

yeah, that's the only problem iwth the TH350, no overdrive. See if you can get a TH400 or 4L60E (they can both be found for reasonable prices)

 

What engine, how built, and how are you gonna use the truck?

 

The TH400 isn't an OD tranny. The 4L60E is, but not the TH400.
The TH400 is basically a beefed up TH350.

400 like mentioned is not OD.

You are probably thinking 700r4. Can usually find stand alone kits for this tranny.

I would go 700R4, with the weight of your 4runner and and decent V8 done right you will have a decent life span. And have OD.

Do the xfer doubler with a 205 and a 203 and your set.

 

The 4L60E and the 700R4 are the same tranny, inside.
The 4L60E is the electronic version of the 700R4.

i think those are both great trannies. You will be happy with either one. You just have to figure out whether you want auto or manual. Its personal preference.

I have the 4L60E and had the 700 in my camaro.
But the 700 is the easier option to swap into a Toyota.

 

The SM 465 is awesome, if you don't spend much time on the freeway. Go with a NV4500 if you go manual. I have driven a FJ40's with both, and similar wheel tire combinations, and the lower granny is not that much different, but the NV4500 is much more refined with shifting.

Had I spent the extra $1000 for the NV4500, I would have never sold my FJ40

Auto might be nice though...
