Any tire subjected to that sort of use may tear off a chunk - rock is after all a teenie bit harder than rubber... and if Schwabs replaces it for you and sends it back to the factory - they take one look at it and do not reimburse Schwabs - it wasn't defective. It isn't up to Schwabs.
I was not trying to be a baby about this. I know the kind your thinking of and thats not me. I have never owned tires such as these. The way I see it is in the brochure I was given by Les Schwabs it shows that these tires are used in RockCrawling comps & mud bogs. Like I said these tires barely had 500 miles on them and my first real trail run on them did some good damage. Now maybe it has to do with me only running them up at 20 psi but I did not lose grip once that I could tell. I know the exact rock that did the damage and it was a simple crawl over it. As I said before:

BigBadBlue the salesman at schwabs has me convinced that it is normal for a tire to do this if a rock tears it. I agree it is the rocks fault not theirs

Maybe you just didnt read all of the posts or maybe you did. Just thought I would clear it up.

Sorry Blue. I would beg to differ.
Its the risk we take when we take our rigs offroad.
I have niced sized chucks on my BFG muds. A couple of sphere like slices on my sidewall but not deep enough to be of any concern.

The only place that would do such an exchange is Discount Tires.
You pay an additional $20 per tire during the original purchase and you get some type of miracle exchange warrenty.
Two people I know have done this, 2000millrunner (Ray), and my nephew LA&RA (LA).
Ray sliced one of his BFG All Terrain during our midweek run 2 months ago at Mt. Gardner and LA did one of his BFG muds at Reiter last year. Both tires had 3 to 4 inch long gouges in the sidewall. Discount Tires exchanged them no questions ask.
I bet you can guess where Im purchasing my next set of muds at!

I got my MT/R's at Discount Tire. It was $22 extra per tire. So I'm hoping I get to use that warranty at least once

you think thats rock rash? looks pretty minor to me, but i understand you were a little upset since they were practically new. wait till its light out and ill take a shot of the gaps missing from my MTRs. Its normal if you spin your tires on high friction surfaces with any sharp edges.

on another note i tore the sidewall open on a dunlop mud-rover only weeks after purchase from tire-rack, they negotiated to a new tire for only $40 shipped so i didnt much complain. i dont remember paying any extra for a warranty either

4wheelparts has a road hazzard warrenty that if it bust with 50% tread left on it you get a new tire. i think it was 10% of tire cost when you purchase your tires to get it.

at wheel works, we have a similar warranty, however the fine print says that if we can say that you abused the tire, then its no good and not our fault

I think it has more to do with too much traction concentrated all on one spot of the tire. Image for a minute if most the forces needed to move the truck are concentrated on one tire (such as leaning going up a steep hill) and that one tire is on a sharp pointy rock such that only one or two lugs are making contact with the rock. In that case you have more traction than the rubber lug can stand and it snaps. You wouldn't have to have a lot of spinning for it to happen.

Use mt_goat's analogy like this- DISCLAIMER: DON'T REALLY TRY THIS! Take a knife and hold the edge on your arm and slide it like you're shaving. No big deal. Now push down on it real hard and slide it. It may slide or it may grip and not slide or it may take a chunk out of you, or it may do both and take lotsa chucks...

I did this to a brand new 32x11.50 BFG AT KO on my 95 Nissan Pathfinder.

I was on a logging trail and we had to back up unfortuately there were trees all over the ground. I just so happened to catch one just right and it went right through the side wall like a spear. It was a pain the the arse to change because I was on a incline I had to use my buddies spare to chock my front wheels. Anyways BFG covered 1/2 the cost of the tire on a one time deal so I payed about $55 out of pocket for the new one.
Anyways my friend snapped the pic for me. He has alot of other wheeling pics at his website some funny stuff when I began to wheel: http://www.dogwater.net/
