Shift levers...aaaaahhhh!

I have heated and bent, heated and bent, heated and bent, heated and bent, and I still can't get them bent just right to work with my body lift...this is after I cut them in half and welded in the 3" extension. I always get it bent just wrong, so it either pushes into my leg, won't stay in gear, or pulls the transfer case out of gear. This is really starting to irritate me! Does anybody know if anyone does this mod professionally? I am tired of playing with it any more and am ready to pay for a pro to do it.

I read what the professor, Roger Brown, had to say about body lifts before I bought a 1.5" lift from him. I decided anything over that might be too much of a PITA to deal with as it was my first mod. Read his discourse on BLs and I bet you will find a possible solution.

I bet your shifter is hitting the floor of the body knocking the transfer into Neutral. Trim Trim Trim the hole in the floor!!! Then try to undo whatever you did to the levers.

On a side note, a friend of mine with an '82 truck had trouble staying in low range. He just shoved a mini basketball in between the bench seat and transfer lever to hold it in gear. By no means do I reccomend this as a solution but it works for him.

A short throw kit from Marlin Crawler would fix this.

Scott, I'm sure that Crash up in Monroe could do it. You may also want to try getting another shifter from the junk yard to start from scratch. We can cut out your old extension and use that in a new shifter.

We can use mine as a model if you want. My body lift is only 2" but it should still work the same.

Matt and I bent and moved all three of my shifters to work. We were able to bend these on the vehicle. I know that plastic part MAY get in the way (melted), but if we have a spare then we can melt the old one and replace it after the angle is right.

I recall that when mine was done it took the shop about 3 hours to get the shifter just right...

I might try playing with them again, but I think I will go with the short throw options. I thought these were only available for the t-case, and not the transmission. I think a short throw transmission and t-case will be cool. Just gotta save a little scratch...ever on the hunt for overtime!

Short throw is only for the transfer case. Marlin does have a Tacoma short throw plate and an older truck short throw plate.

Don't know how to help you with the transmission though.

Guys, FYI, they do make the short throw for the tranny as well. Just ordered up one for each today. Paid $99 each 'cause that is what the website says, though they are supposed to be $129. There is also a core charge, IIRC, $40 for the t-case, $45 for the tranny.

This is definitely good news for me!

Well, since the tranny on the 'sploder is still in pieces on my kitchen counter I don't want to risk breaking something on truck, since it is our only transportation now. Should be getting the rebuild kit for the 'sploder today and the new input shaft/gear tomorrow or Monday. Hopefully I will have it all back together by Wed or Thurs, then I can work my truck again.

I tell ya that you can pull the parts of Matt's truck, but he's got an auto and this tranny is cooked too.

Like me video from Evan's Creek was entitled. "Have you driven (or wanted to drive) over a Ford lately?"
