Running a winch cable under your truck yes or no

I was stuck in the mud the other day and nothing in front of me. Behind me about 60 feet was a big tree. would it have hurt to run my winch cable under my truck to the anchor point and pull myself backwards? has anyone ever done that. I dont see how it would hurt anything just want some assurance. Thanks guys.

I've heard of people doing that but it sounds pretty sketchy to me. I think a pul-pal would be a much better, safer solution.

im not an authority on this but id say as long as there werent any sharp edges or corners that you were running the cable across it should be okay.

id run the cable through a d-ring on the back of the truck just to make sure it didnt slip anywhere and you end up with your truck upside down.

Couldn't the other vehicle get you out by pulling you either backwards or forwards, depending whether they were in front of or behind you ?

In a lot of cases, if you do as you describe, you will find that your rig starts to go down in front and up in the rear and if you keep it up, you will winch it up onto it's nose (or lid if you keep going).

It can be done, but not usually just by running the cable under... It also trashes your line by the pull angle off the fairlead and all the stuff it drags over along the way.

Interesting question coming from the guy with a "helper" standing on the wheel for counterbalance...

It's REALLY hard to keep your line from getting fouled coming out of the fairlead and then straight under the truck.

That's why I'm going to do a receiver mount winch - I've been in situations where a rear winch would have really saved the day.

I've thought about this myself. It never fails, if your rig gets stuck it's always the end with the winch on it.

The cable could be cut/ripped to shreds after awhile, not to mention all that it comes in contact with under the rig.

If a person was going to make a habit out of it, he/she could run a chunk of say 2" o.d., 3/16" min. wall thickness tubing under the rig.

Take the hook off the cable and push the cable through the tubing first, then reinstall the hook. It would be a tough push though with any used cable.
