Running a spool in the rear?

I was thinking about running a spool in the rear. What are the pros and cons? I know in dry conditions you will chirp when making turns, and in rain or snow, if you accelerate around a trun, youll swing the back end out. ANything else i should know?Or any advise?thx guys

Yup. Every time you chirp them, they're wearing a little faster than they should.

you dont even have to accelerate around a turn to lose it, any turn basically will swing out.. with a locker it will disengage to allow a turn... a spool wont...... a spool is generally just a bad idea on a street driven rig....

yeah, save up the $250 or so for a lock-rite, until then just wheel it, or you could always have someone weld up the front diff.

I would prefer to have a spool in the rear. Much less strain on weaker front driveline components. That being said, my spool is currently up front and I have the broken birfields to show for it.

ive got lockrights and had no problems what so ever you cant beat them for the price.. as for the arb's ive seen them break over and over again...just another high priced gimmick looks to me...as for the detroit sure if you want to spend $400+ on a locker.

Let me guess, you dont have either, and have never driven anything with either as well.

Personally i wish i had just spooled up my rear. Better predictability, and when i blow shafts, i dont have to rebuild it like i do with my locker now. When i go 1 ton ill be running a spool rear and probobally a lockright up front. With the rear locker, the only time it ever disengages on a turn is if im coasting into a parking space. Any throttle when i turn and the tires chirp, because as soon as it gets input torque, it locks. I have no problems in rain, or snow because i know how to drive. The back end doesnt just swing out like you seem to think.

either of them do the same thing, its up to you and your budget, Ive heard more good things about welded rears, over spools, i welded mine and its been fine ever since, and if you do choose to weld, do it in stages and try not to get the carrier too hot

you will be OK in turns if you don't floor it, i drove my runner for about a month with it welded, rain and dry, i did get sideways often, but i wanted to, yes it will wear tires down faster, i was running a set of worn out 31" BFG mud terrains and they showed wear after a month, i wouldn't recommend a spool or welded rear for a daily driver, a auto locker would be a better choice because it would unlock most of the time around turns to save tires, or if you can afford, a ARB would be best, open diff or spool at a touch of a button

you should offer us more info.....maybe a location where you are......or some sort of profile...or maybe a signature with vehicle specifics.....look at my sig.....or look at my webpage. I think you should try the spool in the rear and update us. ZUK
