Regeared and Locked

Regearing to 4.88s seems to be the trend around here, so I thought I'd join in.

But really, I did get 33s a month ago. So I knew it'd be a good idea to regear. I considered 4.56s and 4.88s, and went with the 4.88s because they're better for offroad, and don't hurt milage that much more anyway.

The Runner got real sluggish with the stock 4.10s and 33s. The power is
definitely back. Better acceleration too. It is noticible. I haven't really
gotten to test milage much yet, but it seems good so far. Better than 4.10s/33s, that's for sure.

Regearing my 2002 wasn't as easy as an older Runner. For some reason, Toyota decided to give me a screwy spline count - 29. The rear driveshaft yoke wouldn't work. Anyway, had some work done, and had the rear diff converted to a usual 8" V6 version like other 4Runners.

And yes, I tossed in a locker while I was at it. Only the rear for now. Yes I know it'd have been nice to lock the front too, but that just wasn't in the cards this time. Anyway, I went with an ARB air locker, and I love it.

Everything works well.

Right before I did this work, I noticed a Diff Lock switch mod Darren did, and I had to do it too. This is just so cool...

The Air Compressor switch in in the usual spot for 3rd gen 4Runners, but I wanted this for the Locker switch. The FR RR position isn't hooked up yet obviously, but when I get the front ARB, I got the switch right there.

Also, got my website updated with a bunch of recent mods. And more to come soon...

here's some info:

FZJ80 Diff Lock Switch (1993-1997 Land Cruiser)

I live near Land-Cruiser-everything shop Specter Off Road, and I picked on up there for 45 bucks. You can order it from them at SOR.com. Or, try your local dealer.

I only put the switch in, the shop that did the work for me did the wiring. They said it wasn't hard. I hear you just have to play with the ARB wiring harness, and then you hook up the switch to the arb solenoid.

Damn charles, you definitely should have joined up this past weekend for the holcomb creek/big bear run! You would have loved it and could have tested your new locker too

Lookin good on those mods btw and I really like the LC switch! It looks like I'll have to consider that switch option too now when I get my locker(s)

Good deal on the switch. Congrats!

If it weren't for your radio and lack of dust, I'd say that was a picture of my interior!

I'd like to see a write-up about that switch if you got one! Dang Darren, you weren't lying about the dust dude! Clean out that dirty rig of yours!

I'm wondering if that LC switch would fit in the large hole to the left of the steering wheel in the 3rd gens... I need to replace that plug that's in mine anyway...
