Recovery Gear !!!

What can I say but like 50 Ton Shop presses every one else needs stuff pressed but me.

The Short Version I tend to be a nice Guy and let people use my things !!

Warn Winch 9.5 TI in receiver cradle mount. Most often used to move machinery or load things on trailers.

Most often lives inside under the rack for hanging jackets.

After the usual instructions about use and rewinding the cable under some tension etc etc .

Skip to Friday when I get stuck in the drive way and it was warm and sunny making the snow real slippery .

I decided to get the Winch and just extract myself ok perhaps play some as well .

Good thing I did rather in the comfort of my place then along side a busy road extracting some Horse Women`s Truck

from the ditch before her husband found out she drove off the road again.

The first two level of the cable was just fine after that it was such a mess I have no clue how someone could have wound a winch cable that bad .

I had just winched myself up the hill this fall having about 100' of cable off and the cable was fine

I was unable to even spool the cable off it was twisted even knotted I was able to get the hook off get the cable off .

It was kinked in so many places I just tossed it in the scrap pile.

Good Thing I had a new winch rope to install I must say I like that much better then the steel cable Time will tell just how it holds up.

***Moral of the Story Check your recovery gear before you really need it !!!

Now since I was at Home it was no big deal If I was moving some machinery it would have been quite embarrassing and expensive.

It is a shame really He does mean well but is quite clueless at times.

His wife keeps coming over to visit perhaps take things out in trade.

Maybe he is clueless in other areas as well.

I had that same thing happen with my milemarker winch, which was incredibly slooooooow. I hated that winch, I mean I was glad to have it but it was a pain. Anywho, I was out snow wheelin and got stuck and bird nested the crap out of the cable. Had to cut 30' off. I upgraded to a smittybuilt and man what a difference! I've winched several times with the newer winch and at the end of the day always respooled it with the help of another rig. It's funny though, you're suppose to keep the wire tight on the drum when respooling but as soon as you go to free spool to pull out the damn cable always loosens......sigh......and then I switched to synthetic!

my winch has been sitting on the shelve for about a year.
thinking about negotiating with my accoutant (aka: the missus) for $$ to get synthetic rope before i put it on..

So far I was impressed with how The Synthetic went on it looks to be much more forgiving then cable.

I just had to crimp a lug on the end to attach it to the winch drum.

Having worked pretty much with steel cable all my life it just seems different .

Time will tell I guess
