Recommended gearing

Ok I am having a hard time deciding to go with 4.88 or 5.29's on my current 1988 4runner build. I am rebuilding the motor(22re) now and installing a new cam, header, and prob will use the marlin crawler hd clutch to the 5 speed. The tires that I want to use for this build are the Summit Mud Dawg 315x75x16's.

My goal is a truck that can handle freeway speeds, be a DD, and also tow about 2k lbs(camper or trailer with gear) A friend of mine has an 85 22r with the 4.88's and 35's, and his speedometer is only about .5 mph off from GPS'ing it, but the truck can barely pull his trailer with a riding mower on it. I know the 22re produces a bit more power and with a few of the mods I'm doing I am hoping for around 130ish horsepower.

I'm leaning towards the 4.88's but your guys input would be greatly appreciated.

I have 4.88s in a fresh 22RE and dd'd on 37s for about 6 months w/ no problems and plenty of power...acceleration in a 5th gear and up hills. A good motor is just as important as gearing if not more so.

Well I'm having a rebuild shop here in Columbus,MS do the machining on the 22re block and getting the head reworked at another good shop, the final assembly though will be done here in my driveway (no shop stinks ). I've never rebuild a n automobile motor but have done several aircraft recips so shouldn't be that hard. With a decent cam, header, electric fan, and 2.25 cat back exhaust I'm hoping all will turn out well.

I would do 5.29's - WAAAAY better to be a touch over geared than undergeared with our motors.
