Please Help With My 99 2wd need to add more off road capabilty
I parents just bought me a 99 4runner Limited. I love It I am defiantly a Toyota Convert. My goal is to make my 2wd more suited for off road.
I understand i will not go places a 4X4 will. Please do not tell me to sell and buy a 4X4. I have researched to the best of my abilty. I tested for a LSD by jacking it up and spinning the wheel. They went in opposite direction so i belive it does not have it. But there is a sticker on the back of the differiental that appears to be white which toyota said could be the sticker to tell if you have LSD. This is my plan please tell me if you advise. I am willing to spend 1500 to 2000 dollars.
I want
2" to 3" inch Body lift
Large off road Tires (Not Sure What Size Will Fit Please Help)
A Lunch Box Locker (Open To Suggestions)
I Read all Forum Rules And Am Trying Not To Break Any Please Help.
I want to be part of the yotatech family.

nice rig man...2wd can go pretty far with a locked rear.... how good are you with tools??? a body lift would be a good first project..... on my 93 runner i got 31.10.50.15s on it bfg all terrains or mud terrains if you want more aggressive they work great....

If I had a 2wd I would save up for a long travel front. However those are pricey.
Depends on what wheeling you do, and what you want out of your truck.
Obviously 33" tires and a locker would do wonders.

I Live in Texas in the dallas area. I plan on doing dirt trails. Maybe try going through mud, Not sure how much the runner will take with these mods. Im just learning as i go.

OK, then your plan sounds fine.
Taller tires will help more than wider tires. Staying narrow also minimizes the fitment issues. I would look into 33x10.50 if you have 15" rims or 255/85-16 if you have 16's.
In particular, I would look at the Trxus MT in 255/85-16
www.4crawler.com for body lift
One thing to note with 2WD is you don't have a low range tcase so you will have to take obstacles faster than the 4WD's - armor is CRITICAL, especially skidplates!

I'd run through some of these threads and see what you can pull out of them. This is a member's 3rd gen that was 2wd that he built quite nicely. I thought he did a great job on building up his truck for offroad, trail running use. Very functional.

Take that money and buy a 4WD pickup...no use in spending money on a vehicle that is 2WD trying to make it into a vehicle for 4 wheeling...even with a rear locker, you're screwed in the mud, and if you get in any decent rocks you're done too and the fact that you don't have low gearing is kind of a big thing also...

Yeah I saw that, the guy was neliconcept and he has since converted his 2wd into 4wd...and he probably could have gotten through that trail in 2wd without a locker to begin but I guess I should have actually read the whole post but since this has been covered a gazillion times on here I figured it was just like every one else's on the subject, I didn't get to the part where it said don't tell me to buy a 4wd...

It's still like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
I guess it being Texas it's not too big a deal tho' but in Colorado I can't imagine doing even our simple trails in 2wd.

Typically 2wd trucks that get built up off road do so more for desert prerunning style of off roading. That said, SUV's usually aren't the vehicle of choice due to their added mass and higher COG.
As long as your expectations are realistic have at it and build up. Otherwise, if you want to do the prerunner thing, you might consider an older extra cab pickup. It's lighter and will benefit further from the longer wheel base.
I'm not intending to discourage you, I'm just throwing out some food for thought. You could certainly build your 4runner to be a fun light trail expedition wheeler which can tackle fire roads at good speeds.

I'm from the dallas area, most of the stuff you'll be doing, you should do just fine with 2wd/locker. My friend beats the crap out of his 2wd jeep and he can go a lot of places I go (just not all haha), but if you throw a lift on there, plus some 33x10.50s with a locker, i'm sure you could keep up with almost any 4x4 around there, that is unless you head out to barnwell mountain or some other park.

Can you DO that trail in 2WD? I guess ... if you hit it when conditions are really good (which they did), beat the crap out of your truck, don't take pix when you need a tug, and bypass all the obstacles ...

BFG A/T and M/T
Swamper TSL Radial
What other choices are there for those of us who want to run radial tires? It seems like 33x12.5x15" tires grow on trees, but skinny ones aren't that popular.
Sorry for the slight thread jack

I have Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT in 33x10.50. They don't show on TireRack, but my local BigO can get them.
I think there are a couple Maxxis tires available in that size.
The selection expands a little if you go to 255/85-16
