Picked up many pairs of 63" chebbys today.
As for the durability of the ARB, It all really comes down to the install. If yor ARB pukes oil out the engagement switch, bad install, if they don't bend the copper tube right, bad install.
To quote Mark Mason, "If it's insalled right, it will last forever."
Plan on at least $1500 for a good ARB install: parts, labor, bearings, gear oil, etc.
If you want to know who is smart enought to install ARB's in Phoenix e-mail me.
Randy Ellis runs ARB's on his Tacoma. Randy "Big Unit" Johnson's Jeep TJ was over there the other day with my 4Skinner.

I have had my Detroit soft locker in for about a year now, by far the best mod I have done on my truck. It is just like an old school detroit, they just updated it so it is not so noisy.
I bought the detroit, master install kit and had it installed for about $600.

What gear brand should I use?
I guess I will keep my 4.88's up front and match a new set in the back. ( unless there is a compelling reason to go 5.29's) This thing cruises on the highway at a decent RPM, so I think I could stay away from the 5.29's for now. If it iis not worse than stock (4.88's with 31's) I'd consider going to the 5.29's. Yotatech - help me decide!!!

I have 5.29's with 33's and a 3.0
I really think that this is the best way to run 33's on a 2nd Gen runner, almost exclusive of the tranny.
Mike, ask yourself a serious question. How long will you stay IFS? How much will you wheel with IFS before the swap?
My personal opinion is that if the answer is 2 years and not a lot, then living with highway performance as it is now and just waiting for a swap makes a lot of sense.
For me, it was time to run IFS for a while and I was not prepared to deal with the bad gearing, so I went 5.29's.

Thanks, SSCHAEFER, I'm going to go look to the place you mentioned tomorrow.

That's an open diff but you could have a locker set up in it and then swap the locker one into your truck.

So now I'm confusing myself.
MARLIN CRAWLER told me I need a new complete third because I can't use the one that's on now for the locker. I am taking a third, same as my third, to install the locker, yet I can't use my third I have on now??
Hmmm.. I don't get it

Yeah, if it is the stock 4.88 third, then it's the same thing as what you have. How much were you looking at spending? Marlin has arb'd thirds for $1300 and you can add the compressor for $200. Install it all yourself and that's it. Or you can save about $100 if you go with a caddy compressor.
You can also do a e-locker third from inchworm for $1200, but you need to do a little drilling and welding on you axle housing.
Or lincoln lock it and be done with it.

You need to get another third that has anything BUT 4.88's.
Get one out of a V6 with 5 Speed if you plan to regear. Those will not be 4.88's
FWIW, I'm in the same boat as you.
EDIT: I'm too damn slow...

This is what I am understanding.
Why would I need to get a third with anything but 4.88's??
Honestly, I'm totally lost at the moment.
STEVE, MARLIN quoted me $1,400 for a complete third with gears and lockers installed.

You can install a Detroit with stock 4.88's because there is a separate Detroit PN, or has been in the past.
The stock 4.88 gears are different than other gears and the carrier is different. IIRC, the gears are thicker.

I suppose YUKON gears would be my next bet.
Exactly what is the carrier?
