Now THIS is a compressor...

Some of you may have been following my "Odyssey of the Compressor" chronicles or perhaps even stood by at the end of a run while I cursed like a longshoreman when my QuickAir once again died on me.

So far with this rig, I have destroyed two ARB compressors and now one QuickAir2. I have had the compressors mounted on the fender, inside the engine compartment where it gets hot from the headers and where it gets pretty filthy, so I am confident that while all the compressors died ugly deaths, I am mostly to blame for that.

This time around, I decided to pull out some stops and do a bit of over kill. The new one is a Viair 550C, 100% duty cycle. 2.90CFM at 0 PSI. It's going to be mounted in a much cleaner, cooler location. I am going to get it installed this weekend and will keep you up to date on how it does.

That thing is enormous! It looks even bigger than my Extremeaire. Nice chair by the way...

heheheh It's not the nice compact compressors I have grown used to for sure The black bar in front of it is a 12" ruler. But I am hoping it's performance will be worth the mounting hassles.

The chair is pretty standard issue for the company. I wish I knew who choses the patterns for these things, it's like something straight out of the 70's, from a house that would have "avocado" colored appliances.

Talking Compressor

Holy Cow Batman! Mounting the compressor in the toolbox eh...or perhaps in the extended cab? Dang that sucker is HUGE!!!

Again, thanks for the front end frame idea. I got the scrap today and I'll get on it soon.

Nice. Gotta love the Viair bling. I was considering that compressor when I was shopping for an OBA system. However, space was a concern of mine and that compressor was just too big so I went w/ the 450 model.

Interesting how I noticed the chair before I even noticed the compressor.

So tell us, where is it going to be mounted?

The current plan of record is to cut the bottom out of the toolbox and put a drop floor in it, then mount the compressor in that cubby hole. Tomorrow we'll do some test fitting and see what we have for options. It should be interesting.

My brother is a true lover of all things retro(tacky). I bet he'd pony up some hard cash for that chair.

The best part is that I have TWO of those chairs in my office. I have grown so used to them that I don't even see them anymore. But, I am seeing them anew through you folks and you are right... they are pretty bad heheheh

Perhaps they need a quick trip to the paint shop

Nice toy there Rob!
Funny, for some reason - right when I saw it I thought the toolbox would be the only place for that...

...then again, there aren't many other mounting options, are there :pat:

Rob:

That's one massive compressor. I was wondering what made ya go w/ the 550 instead some other compressor such as the extremeaire compressor?

Just wondering! Don't forget to show some pix of the final mounting location

I shopped pretty extensively and the decision came down to the 550C and the Extremeaire. The Extremaire has a better CFM rating, but I was able to talk one of my pseudo sponsors into giving me a deal on the 550C, so that swung my decision.

Complete with a new pressure switch, I was able to get the 550C for just a bit over $200. Since the best deal I could find on the Extremeaire was around $350, that pretty well made my decision for me.

I am hatching a plan to put in a York/Sanden at some point, so getting a good compressor for a reasonable price, to get me by until then was the priority.

I will take some photos as we nail down the installation details today

I just got back from the garage...there's no web-cam like for the swap. I'm starting to wonder if it should be mandatory for the stuff they do.

That compressor is gigantic! Picture a 2-liter soda bottle on it's side, with a roll of toilet paper coming up on one end. That...is how big that sucka is.

Jim-A Baracus approves
