I got the black fogs, but looking at the round fogs, they don't have the plastic lip that mine have. This may actually help to diffuse the light a bit more. You can see mine on Saturday and judge for yourself.

BTW, here are some pics I took in a dark alley way. Part of the issue is the flash from the camera makes it hard to see how much the rocklights are lighting up:

I might suspect though that with those and your new backup lights, you may be close to wanting a high ouput alternator.

They're a breeze to put in... I'd be glad to help or show ya' on Saturday.

Another thing I was thinking about in regards to the lights is the distance between the lights and where they are aimed. For example, with the pair that are illuminating the rear tires, if they were moved more towards the front, they'd probably do a better job of illuminating the whole side of the vehicle including the rear tires. Its like holding a flashlight 1 ft. from a wall only illuminates a small portion of the wall, but back up a few feet, and you can see the whole wall. Obviously these lights weren't designed for what I used them for. So, I may have a little more work to do just yet....

You inspired me to pull those stock hella (rectangle) driving lights off my stock bumper and mount them under the TJM. I went to Home depot and bought some metal to fab up a bracket and I didn't even need it. I happened to find two slotted L brackets lieing around and they worked perfect! I was amazed there was even a hole already in the body for me to bolt them to. The wires were already there so I stretched them a little, hooked the harnesses back up and tried them out. I have to say they look very cool. It's nice to be able to hang out the driver window and see the terrain in front of your tire.

As far as the mounting, when I thought about doing this in the first place, I didn't want it to be too time consuming, so seeing a couple of preexisting holes made life a hell of alot easier. going to add any on the side for the rear tires? Post some pics if you get a chance...

I was driving hom from Bellingham last night after dark. I kept looking at other trucks on the road and imagining how cool _I_ would be if I just flipped on my rock lights while on the highway.

Those neon ricers would have nothing to my sunlight-bright system with the rotating color lenses and the built-in mirror ball!

Dang it David... argh.

Thanks! I will try to get a writeup done on this at somepoint. The rainy season is fast approxing, so my days of working out in the parking lot are going to be put on hold for a few months, plenty of time indoors for writing.

The nice thing about this mod is that its pretty cheap if you go with the JCW lights (30 dollars for four lights). The switches from Toyota are probably the most expensive part! (~15 bucks).

 

Here's some photos of my junk. If you look closely in the last couple of pictures you can see the mounting brackets. They are black L shaped. I've never had an easier mod. The holes where the bolts are were already there.
This is not a good application for these particular lights but what the hell...at least they are being put to use.

This is such a cool mod. My only question is, aren't you worried about gravel and flying debris and suchlike reaching out and touching these lights? I know, in the crawling mode you're not going fast enough to care, and if you're driving at normal speeds the debris is flung to the back of the tire, but I still have this worry... I think when I do this I'm installing some kind of rock guards for the lenses.

 

Yeah, thought of that. For the lights in the front, I'm not worried, they're tucked up in the front bumper, in front of the lights, so they should be pretty protected. For the ones in the rear? We'll have to wait and see. However, the lights were so cheap they're easy to replace. I might cut out some steel mesh and cover them nonetheless.

On a side note, I just ordered the Trail Carnage Skid Plates, should be here in a week or so, so I'll post some pics of those too....

 

I believe the pirate guys scuff up the lens on their rocklights to diffuse the light better.

Also, FYI, walmart has some nice, small fog lights that are only $15 per pair. I'm using them for backup lights right now.
