Mudding in a 4cyl 2wd?
Just wondering if it would be a good idea to go mudding in a 4cyl 2wd tacoma? the mud is real soft not sure how deep. The truck is lifted 6" suspension and 2"body with 33x14 super swampers on it. The truck does not have a rear locker so would it be okay or would we be asking to get stuck.

?? might get stuck might not, just don't stop and make sure somewone w/ 4wd is there if you do get stuck!! I went mudding in a 2wd ranger only got stuck twice, once high centered and the other lost all speed and had no grip..this was 12 years ago sorry no pics..

Just remember that without a locker, you only have one drive wheel. If that loses traction, you're in deep yoghurt. With a locker, you have two driving wheels... Much better. With 4wd and a locker, you have potentially 3 driving wheels - even better. With 4wd and 2 lockers, you have 4 driving wheels - best. Does that help?

I'd go offroading on trails first before going mudding. In a 4cyl.

With a 4cyl, you're just gonna have less hp. I had a 99 Tacoma with the 2.7 and I frequently drove through fairly thick mud before putting it in 4wd. You can do it, but the fact is, sooner or later, you probably will get stuck. I've gotten stuck with my truck in 4lo. Just be sensible. But yes, if you get a locker, you're less likely to get stuck. Even with a 4 banger.

Wheel what you got. Put those Super Swampers to use. Getting stuck is part of mudding and you'll have more than your fair share being 2WD. Who cares as long as those you're wheeling with don't mind pulling you out.

If you want to go through some crazy mud you'll need the 4x4 with lockers, the whole bit, but for playin' around, you should be fine, especially with the swampers. Eventually I bought a 4x4 when those went, but I still get that stuck too. 33x14? those are some wide ass tires, and by the way,

at first i didnt like the swampers cause the ride was kinda rough but after i got use to it i love em. I will try to get pictures of my truck up for you guys to check out. not sure how to post it up on the board though.

I would lock it before buying 4WD. As mentioned above, locked 2WD is the same as 4WD with open diffs (2wheels driven). As a matter of fact, 2WD locked can be BETTER than 4WD open/open because at least one wheel with traction is receiving power.
I also agree, however, that maybe ARB isn't your best bet. A lunchbox type locker would do you fine and save a bunch of money.
