modding spare tire carrier on a 2nd gen 4runner
Ok, so I have a 4runner with the spare tire mounted on the tail gate. I used to think that I got lucky getting one with the spare mounted up high like that, but I found out that it still sits a little too low for going through ditches, and I am having to remove it so that I don't rip it off. So I'm wondering if anyone has modified the stock tire carrier to raise the tire. I'm thinking of moving the tire up about 12 inches right now, though I'm not sure how the rack would sport the higher center of gravity. Iv searched and didn't see anyone doing this. Has anyone here done or seen something like this?
This is a shot of her from last year:
For now I think I'll just stick to taking it off for the hard core stuff. I'm just thinking out loud for now, any ideas are appreciated
Thanks, Martin.

Let me give you my story....
I installed the same Tire holder and found out the exact same issue....
So I moved the trie up approx the same you are talking about and tried to brace it the best I could. I found that it flexed really bad and the Leverage it created was just too much for that frame. I took it out for 2 wheeling trips where it eventually broke off. If your going to do this make sure you use heavy tubing and dont get crazy about how high you mount it. Me personally, I took mine off and used my roof rack to hold my tire until I do my chop top project... I hope this info helps you out
