This is my first toyota. I got a 91 4runner it is lifted 5" with 35" tires. Iy has a 4.3 Chevy in it with a turbo 350 trans. My question is it does not have steering stabilizers on it at all. When you go over a bumper it is all over the place. Would a stabilizer fix this problem. Also it has no sway bar on it. Is that normal?

 

 

Pretty typical of a POS 5" IFS lift, especially if it has been driven around for....maybe a couple years, and has been wheeled.

 

So what to do to fix?

 

Well, you could start with checking for worn components; tie rod ends, idler arm, ball joints, etc. If that is all OK, try putting a steering stabilizer back on and some sway bars with extended end links to restore them to the stock orientation will probably be a good idea.

 

Trouble shoot the front end. Factory FSM will tell you how. so will the books, chilton/haynes.

 

Get a steering stabilizer (probably not the problem but will help), chack the Idler arm for play (bet this is a problem) ball joints and TRE's. Those are the things that always made my truck feel loose and worn out. Each time I replaced them it was good till the next wheeling trip then it was idler arm busing time again.

 

I've got upper and lower ball joints if you find yourself in the market. Was going to replace mine but found a heck of a deal on a solid axle and decided not to put them on.

Had a friend look at it. It has week leaf springs in the front. When you turn the tires you can see them flex and twist. I just have to find a place to get stock height springs for the front.

 

It sounds like your 4runner has a solid axle swap. You probably have 48 inch springs in the front. They are measured eye to eye. You could probably make your own spring pack by removing and adding leafs until you have it like you want. It is hard to say with out seeing pictures of your suspension.
Make sure the leaf springs bolts and the u-bolts are tight. You could also check the wheel and trunnion bearings to make sure they are not loose.
