Looking into using unimog axles as opposed to dana 60's

I am looking in to using unimog axles in my 86 toyota pickup instead of dana 60's like I originally planed. I really don't know much about them other than what little I have read on websites. How hard is it to put unimog axles under a toyota as opposed to dana 60's? With the dana 60's ill have to run 7.17 gears in order to run my 46 XL's, so will I have to re gear the unimog axles? Don't they come with a locker stock? I found a set of axles for $2000 that are used and in good shape. I just want to know all the in's and out's of putting unimog axles under my truck before I go and buy them or the 60's. So in the end which will be the most economical?

There is a TON of INFO on Pirate on these swaps.

You will find all of the info you need on gears, flange adapters to work with toyota stuff, as well as builds detailing what needs to be done.

x2... Another thing to consider with mogs is a top pinion and portal axles... you get great ground clearance, but you have all that to shove up under the truck... usually leads to a lot of lift, and a higher CoG, at least the ways I've looked into it at.

i am currently putting unimog 404 axles, and 54" boggers underneath a 79 ford at work right now.i fabed up a central tire inflation system for it.
on the 79 we are having to move the spring perches but we are also running leafs.
i have personally dis assembled and reassembled both axle.
i love the everything is huge.
maybe in the future i will pick some up for my runner.
there is only a couple negatives so far.
(1) the pinion is pretty long so front drive shaft may be short and may have to cut and turn the diff(i am going to on the 79 ford)
(2) you are looking at 20" wheels unless you get the conversion kit to run 15" wheels.
other then that you should be all right
the gear ratio of a unimog axle is 7.?? to 1 i cant remeber exactly, but the ring gear is about 3.54 and the portal is 2 to 1.
if you have any questions just ask and i will try to answer them for you.

in a couple months we are puting some in the bosses fj-40
