Locker VS Positrack

my friend told me today that posi-track is the same thing as a locker. I was trying to tell him that they were different but he doesnt believe me.

Is this true that they are the same thing. Im not very good on this topic.

Posi-traction is a limited slip differential.
Locker is when both axels are locked together via gears or friction plates.

A locker, either selectable or automatic is a device that connects both axle shafts together. Some posi's are lockers in that sense, but some aren't, as they will only allow a clutch or spring to transfer power to the other axle shaft from the one without traction...This is kind of an oversimplification, but for more reading check out http://auto.howstuffworks.com/ and search for "differential". Should be some good stuff there...

I also had a discussion pertaining these two items and it almost led to a brawl with another co-worker who was a supposed "ex-junk yard" worker and according to him, obviously knew more about this than I did.

Locker, two sides locked together under load via complete mechanical coupling, like teeth or posts engaging.

Posi, short for LSD, that is they allow a limited amount of slipping before the sides are joined and there are not teeth or posts like a locker.

Lockers are for wheeling. Posi's are for street trucks and cars.
