hey guys im having trouble finding some info on lockers. i want to upgrade my 94 runner with a rear locker. im looking for some advice as to which locker would be best for the truck. can someone direct me somewhere on here and give some insight. thanks.

 

are you looking for a selectable locker? or an automatic locker? full carrier, or lunchbox?

what are the primary uses of the vehicle?

do you care if it makes noise around turns?

do you understand what you are getting into going with a locker?

if you dont offroad ALOT. I would look into a selectable locker.

I had a detroit in my Jeep. The quiet one. I found it too be a pita on road. Offroad it was a god send. But know what I know now I would have definately saved up and got an ARB or Electrac....

the main purpose i have for it is moderate trail used. i wasnt able to get as far as i wanted to on the trails. i had talked to a buddy at caronlina rockshop and he suggested going with a locker. it was between that and a winch. i figured the locker was best bet first. the runner is mostly on the road but i want it locked and ready for the trails....

I have locker experience starting in 1986..... Normally, I don't recommend any lunchbox locker for a rear application but the friendly nature of the auto tranny lets me do that. Torque strains are not as great with the auto tranny and clunks are almost non-existant. So the Aussie would be ok if you have the auto-tranny. The price is right too at 239.

Now, if you have a stick, then it's probably a good idea to steer clear of all lunchbox lockers in the rear application....they just tend to clunk too much and they are considered "medium duty". For the stick, I recommend the more expensive Detroit Soft Locker. Minimizes the clunks....still will get them just not as many as a lunch locker. About 450 bucks also.

I see no probs using the Yota Electric locker......they seem to be dependable and it has an obvious advantage on the paved road.

I have nothing good to say about ARB's.....and that's mainly due to some dude named Murphy.

 

Then start saving your pennies and get a selectable. You can go with the ARB, or a Toy factory electric rear locker. Both can be disengaged for on road driving, but locked up for off road and only when you need them.

Selectable is the best of both worlds in my opinion.

 

I've a Detroit Soft Locker in the rear and an Aussie Locker in the front of my 4Runner.

I love'em, specially the Aussie, but the Soft Locker is very good also, no problems in the road, I got used in three or four days.

My 4Runner is manual and no problems, I only notice the locker in sharp turns going up.

PS: For less the money I'd had an ARB I had an Aussie, a Detroit Soft Locker, new R&P in front and the install of all.

i run a lock-right in the rear of my V6 auto Runner. i have no complaints to this day... i love it. does just fine on the road.

 

Aussie locker for the rear. I have a friend who runs one in the rear of his DD 4runner and it works excellent. Very, VERY good street manners and works great off road.

 

I love the ARB in the rear of my 95 V6 with 5 speed. I'm sure an e-locker would work great too. They're selecatable and do not change the driving habits of the truck. They are more expensive than something like a detroit or ez locker, but for me the extra cost was worth it to maintain on road driving habits.

 

I run a detroit softlocker in the rear and love it. My 4runner isn't my daily driver and even if it was I would probably stick with a detroit. They don't fail. If you get used to them, turning is no problem and as long as you aren't slamming the gas pedal down, the clunking will stay to a minimum. My dad has run an arb in the front of his rig for 15 years and never had any trouble with it. I have heard good stuff about the elockers, but the dismantler by my house wanted $1000 just for the used 3rd member...I dropped my 3rd member off at hicks 4x4 and picked it up a few days later and he charged me $500 for the locker and R&P setup. something to think about.

 

Another thing to think about.... If you are planning on running larger tires in the near future, or planning on regearing, and if you go with something more than a lunchbox locker, go ahead and take care of your regear while you're in there... One less thing to have to take care of later down the road. HOWEVER remember to regear the front too, not just the rear. You can also get completed ready to go 3rd members that you just bolt up with a locker and any gear ratio from places like marlin crawler or randy's.
