5/16's. I don't have a great reason why, other than it being rated much higher than anything I'll pull. It's also thinner and cheaper, so why pay more and fit less on the drum?

For strength maybe? Some want that extra comfort zone. Like using 3/8"s steel for a bumper versus 1/4".
